Marvel Comics has introduced a stellar new team of fledgling superheroes into canon – and fans are already asking how the squad stacks up against the publisher’s prior Young Avengers rosters. The latest version of the New Champions is a powerhouse collection of nascent Marvel heroes, and it is worth taking a look at how they compare to their predecessors.

In New Champions (2025) #1– written by Steve Foxe, with art by Ivan Fiorelli and Ig Guara – the eponymous team face off against the Brothers Grimm. When the Brothers mistake Moon Squire for Moon Knight, he corrects them. Hullrune continues by saying they’re not even the Avengers, and Cadet Marvel confirms they’re neither West Coast nor Young Avengers either.

Liberty finishes by announcing the team’s real name: the New Champions. One of the Brothers Grimm asks what happened to the old Champions, but is interrupted by an attack from Moon Squire.

On the publication side, the New Champions first appeared in a cover art series called the New Champions variants, celebrating the success of Spider-Boy, the forgotten sidekick of Spider-Man. Marvel’s current all-star artists were tasked with designing alternate universe sidekicks for Marvel’s biggest heroes. Slowly, these “new champions” were introduced into the comics and are now gathering in this series. In-universe, the core four members of the New Champions appeared in Spider-Woman (2024) #7-10as kids with powers kidnapped and mindwiped by Hydra. Other New Champions such as Fantasma, Amaranth, and Maystorm first appeared across other Marvel series.

The Avengers’ Sidekicks Officially Launch Their Own Team in NEW CHAMPIONS

After months of anticipation, Marvel has finally announced a fresh “New Champions” series, featuring iconic original heroes like Hellrune and Liberty.

With New Champions, if fans aren’t following all the latest Marvel series, they may be wondering what happened to the prior team of that same time. With the previous Champions slated to make their return in New Champions #3, fans should take the time to catch up. After the Champions series ended, Ms. Marvel died and was resurrected, and is currently one of the stars of NYX. Miles Morales is heading his own series, Miles Morales: Spider-Man, while Nova, Vivian Vision, and Brawn, who united last for Ms. Marvel’s death, will unite again as Champions in March 2025.

Comparing Marvel’s Latest “New Champions” Line-Up To The Publishers’ Previous “Young Avengers” Teams

Comparing The Two “Sidekick” Squads

The line-up for the New Champions includes eight new heroes teased at the end of New Champions #1. It is worth taking a look at the core members of the new team in comparison to their predecessors. That means Liberty, Moon Squire, Hellrune, Cadet Marvel, and Fantasma (to make it five) for the New Champions, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Nova, Vivian Vision, and Brawn for the Champions, and Wiccan, Hulkling, Iron Lad, Patriot, and Kate Bishop for Young Avengers. The New Champions are still new, and are in the process of learning their powers, so their full potentials are unknown at this time.

Overall, the Young Avengers are a much more experienced team, and are much stronger than the New Champions.

Not many characters can match Wiccan when comparing powers, as he is one of Marvel’s most powerful characters. Hellrune also has a mystical power-set, though the specifics of her powers are still unknown, and it seems unlikely she will be able to out-magic Wiccan. Liberty uses hard light technology, and Iron Lad uses technology too, but his is futuristic, as he is a younger version of Kang the Conqueror. Cadet Marvel has incredible strength, but he could be overpowered by Hulkling. Overall, the Young Avengers are a much more experienced team, and are much stronger than the New Champions.

New Champions #3 – Available March 19, 2025

The New Champions took a name and catchphrase that didn’t belong to them, and the old Champions have something to say about that. In New Champions #3, both Champions teams will come face-to-face and determine which is the most powerful Champions team. In terms of powers, the Champions and New Champions have a much more equal power set. Cadet Marvel could probably hold his own against Nova for a short while, Spider-Man and Moon Squire could tussle a bit, Liberty and Ms. Marvel could have a fair fight with Ms. Marvel also having her mutant hard light powers.

NEW CHAMPIONS – Full Roster & Powers of Marvel’s New Hero Team Explained

In January 2025, Marvel debuts “New Champions,” its latest team title; here is what readers need to know about the team’s roster before the premiere.

With characters from both Champions teams having similar powers, it may seem like a fair fight, but the previous Champions have so much more experience, and have been developing their powers for so much longer, that by experience alone, the old Champions could overpower the new ones. The New Champions may be able to put up a fight, but there’s no way they’re winning against the team that came before them. They definitely have potential, but they need more practice first as individuals and as Marvel Comics latest answer to the Young Avengers.
