The following contains major spoilers for Phoenix #6, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

One of Marvel’s other greatest cosmic superheroes is officially gunning for the Phoenix.

During the course of her ongoing battle against the Dark God Perikkus, the titular hero of Phoenix #6 has joined forces with some of the Marvel Universe’s other most capable heroes. Unfortunately, her worst enemies have also banded together, and their reach extends much, much further than Jean Grey ever expected. In fact, thanks to the power of the Warlock’s Eye, the reach of the Mad Titan Thanos now extends far enough to take control of Nova from across the stars and force the cosmos’ greatest peacekeeper to turn on the Phoenix in an instant.

Introduced back in 1976’s Nova #1 by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema, Richard Rider was once an otherwise ordinary teen who was chosen by the alien Rhomann Dey to serve as his successor as Nova Prime, a role the young Richard had no idea even existed before that moment. Suddenly imbued with impossible powers fueled by raw cosmic energies, Richard quickly came into his own as the latest member of the Nova Corps. Unsurprisingly, Richard turned towards a career as a costumed superhero in the hopes of honing his abilities before putting them to use fighting any intergalactic wars out among the stars.

Over the decades since his debut, Nova has been a member of numerous major super teams ranging from the New Warriors to the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Secret Avengers. Nova has also been personally responsible for some of the biggest moments in Marvel Comics history, namely the restoration of the once-lost planet of Xandar. Nova has also been on the front lines of every single Annihilation event, proving time and time again just how much of a powerhouse he is, even compared to some of the Marvel Universe’s most storied figures.

Since the fall of Krakoa, Jean Grey has been swept up in a cosmic battle with the Dark God Perikkus, who has made it his mission to see her crushed underfoot. To that end, Perikkus has aligned himself with some of the deadliest villains of all time, such as Thanos, as well as some of the Marvel Universe’s most important politicians in the form of the Galactic Council. Worse still, Perikkus has convinced the member of the Galactic Council to cede control to the Mad Titan, giving Thanos further resources that he certainly cannot be trusted to wield.
