The following contains major spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of Marvel’s newest mutant heroes has already lost his life, and there was never any hope of saving him.
While the young mutant heroes known as the Outliers are out for an otherwise ordinary day at the mall in the pages of Uncanny X-Men #9, their enemies are preparing to unleash one of the most terrifying threats the world has ever seen. Despite the canine Sentinels known as Bloodhounds being so unreliable, someone within Graymalkin Prison sees them fit to test in the field. And, while even Graymalkin’s own director, Doctor Corina Ellis, is vehemently against the move, the Bloodhounds have already proven themselves by claiming the life of the Outliers’ seemingly undying Deathdream.

Hotoru, aka Deathdream, made his Marvel Comics debut alongside the rest of the Outliers in the pages of 2024’s Uncanny X-Men #1 by Gail Simone and David Marquez. Born in Japan, Hotoru died four times that very same day, with his mutant power allowing him to self-resurrect as easily as he drew breath. When Hotoru’s mother passed away, his powers over life, death, and the souls of those long gone allowed him to commune with her and learn the truth of his own nature. Eventually, Deathdream made his way to the United States, where he met his fellow Outliers, Calico, Jitter, and Ransom.
When the Outliers first crossed paths with the likes of Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine, the encounter turned into a classic case of comic book misunderstandings, leading to a brawl between the two teams. Once the dust was settled, however, they found themselves fighting on the same side of the battlefield. Soon enough, the Uncanny X-Men had opened their doors to the Outliers, officially stepping back into their old roles as mentors for the next generation of mutant heroes.

Unfortunately for mutants everywhere, the beginning of the current Uncanny X-Men run also introduced the Bloodhounds. This new generation of Sentinels, like those of Marvel Comics’ ongoing Sentinels series, are comprised of a living, sentient core imbued with all manner of cybernetic augmentations. Rather than having a human host taking charge of things, however, the Bloodhounds were made from stray and stolen dogs living near Graymalkin Prison. Following their grotesque transformations, the Bloodhounds were programmed to hunt and kill any and all mutants they could, though something within them has overridden that programming, leading to the Bloodhounds’ penchant for committing horrific acts of violence, even against unsuspecting humans.
