Immortal Thor

#8, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Thor’s latest family reunion just introduced a horrifying version of one of his own mothers.

After making the journey to a treacherous seaside cliff in Norway and venturing deep into the caverns hidden within, the titular hero of Immortal Thor #8 finds himself face-to-face with one of his mothers – Gaea. Rather than any gleaming bastion of life, however, Gaea instead appears in the form of a towering mass of plant life, one surrounded by all the death and rot that helps to sustain the circle of life that has subsisted her for eons.

Marvel’s Carnage Returns to His Serial Killing Roots

After chasing godhood for months on end, Carnage is getting back to its roots as one of the Marvel Universe’s most brutal serial killers.

Originally introduced to the pages of Marvel Comics as Mother Nature back in 1974’s Doctor Strange #6 by writer Steve Englehart and artist Gene Colan, Gaea is one of the few remaining Elder Gods who were spawned by the Demiurge billions of years ago. Over the millennia, Gaea would give birth to a whole host of gods and primordial beings, including Ammon Ra, Anansi, and of course, the Mighty Thor. This development meant that the god Thor believed to be his mother, Freyja, was instead his adoptive mother, though their relationship has maintained just as strong in spite of that shakeup.

As was revealed in 2021’s Avengers #42 by writer Jason Aaron and artist Luca Maresca, Gaea is not Thor’s only mother. At the moment of Thor’s birth, the infant Asgardian was very nearly killed by the Frost Giant King Laufey, who effectively ended the child’s life in a brazen attack. Fortunately, Firehair, the Stone Age Avenger and then-host of the Phoenix Force, brought Thor back to life with her cosmic flames, imbuing the child with a portion of her power and creating an immortal bond between them.

Spider-Man Just Acknowledged How Long He’s Really Been a Superhero

One of Marvel’s Spectacular Spider-Men nearly broke the fourth wall to remind fans of his colorful superhero career and its origins.

In recent months, Thor’s life has been upset by the introduction of a new pantheon of Utgard-Gods, including Toranos, the Utgard-Thor, and The-One-Who-Cannot-Be-Named, the Utgard-Loki. This pantheon consists of five Elder Gods, all previously unseen, who were exiled to Utgard, a place beyond the reach of the Ten Realms, as well as all other realities. Previously, Utgard was merely home to Those Who Sit Above in Shadow, who at the time were thought to be either the progenitors of all Asgardians or a series of Asgardian myths given form through sheer belief.
