The following contains major spoilers for West Coast Avengers #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The West Coast Avengers’ biggest problem has officially caught the attention of Marvel’s Illuminati.
With the emergence of winged cyborgs in the pages of West Coast Avengers #3, the eponymous team are quick to intercept the apparent threat. Although the situation quickly becomes violent, it is just as fast to turn around once it becomes apparent that Ultron’s purported minions willingly chose to become a part of his angelic army. And, while the idea of Ultron giving people with terminal illnesses a second lease on life might seem like a benevolent mission in and of itself, it is still one that the Illuminati cannot ignore.

First seen in the pages of 2005’s New Avengers #7 by Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven, the Illuminati was initially formed of Doctor Strange, Mister Fantastic, Professor Charles Xavier, Black Bolt, and Namor, all of whom were brought together at the behest of Iron Man in the hopes of creating a united front to address cataclysmic threats before they emerged. For years, the Illuminati were successful in protecting the world from nefarious forces in secret, though their best efforts would only lead to further tragedy. When the Illuminati send the Hulk rocketing into the far reaches of space, they inadvertently kicked off not just one, but two events that would reshape the faces of the same number of worlds.
In the years since they were first formed, the Illuminati has gone through a number of roster changes, with everyone from the Black Panther to Captain Britain and even Amadeus Cho serving as a part of the group at one point or another. Many of the Illuminati’s efforts to expand its ranks were necessitated by events such as the Hood’s search for the Infinity Stones and the discovery of Multiversal Incursions. The current Illuminati is officially comprised of Mister Fantastic, Blue Marvel, Emma Frost Doctor Strange, and Tony Stark, who looks to use them to influence other superteams such as the Avengers to fight the battle against Ultron and his cybernetic followers.

While the first incarnation of the sentient artificial intelligence known as Ultron made its debut in the pages of 1968’s Avengers #54 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the character has gone through dozens of reimaginings over the course of the past six decades. This has led to no small amount of confusion in recent months, as the West Coast Avengers have an Ultron of their own counted among their ranks. As such, the West Coast Avengers have one of the most unique insights into Ultron’s mental space that they could possibly ask for, albeit one that has purposefully tried to separate itself from his previous iterations.
