The 2024 Academy Awards nominations have been announced, and Marvel Cinematic Universe just scored two nominations for two of its films, which were also huge blockbusters.

The Oscars are coming up, and the nominations have just been announced. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has just scored a nod for Best Animated Feature Film (via X), just like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The nomination, which is in association with Sony Pictures, might continue a trend for the trilogy, as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won in its category in 2019. Other nominees in the same category at the 2024 Academy Awards are The Boy and the Heron, Robot Dreams, Elemental, and Nimona.

How Sony’s Miles Morales Spider-Man Provides Representation to All Fans

As Spider-Man, Miles Morales offers representation to kids who need to feel seen, but he also gives it to anyone of any age who loves the Wallcrawler.

While Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s Oscar nomination is nothing to ignore, Marvel has a different reason to celebrate. Its most successful film from 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also scored a nod at the 2024 Academy Awards. The two are not competing directly, because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. landed a nod for Best Visual Effects.

The trilogy has scored nominations in this category for both predecessor films, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but it never won, and the last film in the trilogy might change that. The other contenders in the same category at the 2024 Academy Awards include The Creator, Godzilla: Minus One, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, and Napoleon.

None of the nominations come as a surprise, given how successful both films were. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had a fantastic run at the box office, grossing $845.4 million worldwide, and becoming the fourth most successful film in 2023. It had a budget of around $250 million, similar to other films in the franchise, and luckily, it managed to capture the heart of the audience, and make a profit, even after the marketing costs. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was equally successful, ending its theater run with $682.3 million on an even smaller budget of around $100 million, becoming the sixth highest-grossing film of 2023 (via The Numbers).

Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. was the conclusion of James Gunn’s trilogy, fans and critics alike were impressed. The film was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 82%. The fans were even more pleased, and helped the film reach an audience score of 94%.

When it comes to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the animated film was even more beloved by the critics. Also certified fresh, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse holds a 95% rating from the critics. Meanwhile, fans also loved it, taking it to a similar score of 94%. The animated film will be followed by Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
