The Venom franchise may live on beyond Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock. A new installment in the Spider-Man spinoff series is rumored to be in development at Sony.
According to insider Daniel Richtman (via X), Sony is in development on a Marvel movie focused around Agent Venom, the superhero identity of Flash Thompson, one of Peter Parker’s high school classmates who joins the United States Army after graduation. In the comics, the character becomes Agent Venom after losing both of his legs in the Iraq War and bonding with the symbiote, which he controls via drugs. No other details have been shared about the movie at this time.
‘We Do Listen to the Fans’: Venom 3 Director Explains Dropping One Character From the Trilogy
Venom: The Last Dance writer-director Kelly Marcel reveals why a character from the first two movies was not brought back for the final installment.
Richtman was light on details regarding the Agent Venom movie. While there have been three live-action Flash Thompsons, one for each main Spider-Man film series, it is unclear which, if any, version Sony might be eyeing for the movie. Joe Manganiello, who portrayed Flash in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, previously shared in February 2024 that he’d be open to playing Agent Venom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, stating, “I don’t much about [Agent Venom], I’d imagine that’d be over at Sony. It would be very funny to come back that way.”
Tony Revolori, who portrays the MCU version of Flash, has also expressed interest in returning to the role, specifically for the forthcoming Spider-Man 4, which will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. “As for what I could do? Who knows, but to be honest, I would [be] happy to join up with those people again. It was so much fun the first time,” the actor shared in September 2024. With three movies under his belt, Revolori has portrayed Flash in the most Spider-Man movies. Manganiello only appeared as Flash in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3, while Chris Zylka made his first and only appearance as Flash in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. While Zylka did shoot scenes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, they were deleted from the final cut of the 2014 sequel.
Venom: The Last Dance Remains Box Office King as New Tom Hanks Movie Stumbles
The third Venom movie remains in the top spot at the box office.
The Venom movies have been the most successful entries in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, its franchise focused on supporting allies and villains in the Spider-Man mythos. In Venom: The Last Dance, per the official synopsis, “Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.”
While The Last Dance is confirmed to be the final entry in the Venom franchise, Hardy’s future playing Eddie Brock may not be over, as the character has been rumored to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars and Spider-Man 4 with Tom Holland. Knull, the creator of the symbiotes who is portrayed by Andy Serkis in The Last Dance, is also expected to return in a future Sony/Marvel movie, with Agent Venom certainly a possibility. However, until anything is officially confirmed, fans should take any report or rumor with a grain of salt.
Venom: The Last Dance is currently playing in theaters.
