Despite only recently hitting the market, Marvel Rivals leaks have already teased or revealed numerous playable characters. Some prospective characters are seemingly set in stone, while others are still in the air. Jean Grey is one of the heroes in the latter category, but there’s no doubt that she would have an extremely compelling kit in Marvel Rivals.
Marvel Rivals recently revealed The Fantastic Four, although they had been leaked for a long while before then. Jean Grey and Emma Frost have been discussed as two potential additions hailing from the X-Men. Characters like Blade or Ultron have been leaked with definitive physical evidence of character models, while Jean Grey has mostly been relegated to text unearthed in datamines so far.

Marvel Rivals’ Latest Leaks Paint a Clear Picture of the Future
Marvel Rivals has a few notable snubs despite its relatively large and diverse roster, and new leaks may have given answers to one burning question.
Jean’s inclusion may be somewhat tenuous, but there are some valuable details to draw from. Evidence of Jean Grey’s presence in Marvel Rivals supposedly included the names of her abilities. While this may seem flimsy at first, it’s not dissimilar to a leak during Marvel Rivals‘ development that accurately revealed the launch roster months in advance.
Despite Jean Grey leaks supposedly containing the names of her abilities, this will not be strict speculation based on what those named abilities may correspond to. After all, it’s entirely possible that those abilities are outdated or were inaccurate in the first place. Instead, it is worth exploring the vast potential of Jean Grey’s abilities, and how they may be adapted into Marvel Rivals.
Jean Grey is both a founding member of the X-Men, and one of the most iconic heroines in Marvel Comics. Jean Grey is often referred to by name as opposed to her Marvel Girl moniker, but her role as the Phoenix is undoubtedly one of her most memorable. Given her current status in the comics, it seems very likely that Marvel Rivals will draw heavily on her connection with the Phoenix Force. After all, it is the cosmic power of the Phoenix that sets Jean Grey apart from her many telepathic peers.
Jean Grey Could be a Duelist or Strategist in Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals leaks currently seem to suggest that Jean will be a Duelist, and this makes perfect sense. Although many might associate telepathy and even telekinesis with the support role of a Strategist, Jean Grey is by no means a passive character. Whichever route developers choose, Jean Grey should feature a design where she can use her defensive abilities and wield the raw power of the Phoenix in equal measure.
Starting small, her basic fire would likely be a psychic concussive blast, which itself makes the most sense as a medium-range hit-scan. Jean should also join the majority of the roster with a creative movement option, most likely the ability to lift into the air and float afterward, similar to Doctor Strange’s existing ability. Of course, her design gets a lot more fun once the basics are covered.
Jean Grey’s Kit in Marvel Rivals Should Bring the Best of Both Worlds
Jean Grey’s telekinesis isn’t purely for hurling attacks at foes, and can often be used to create a force field. This ability would usually be reserved for a Vanguard, but it shouldn’t be out of the question, since many of Marvel Rivals‘ heroes subvert traditional archetypes. Jean has also shown the ability to manipulate other people’s will with telepathy, which could be represented with a unique ‘charmed’ effect featured in many games. Furthermore, Jean has used this same power to buff the abilities of her allies.
Whether or not it serves as the core of her kit, the Phoenix should always represent the height of Jean Grey’s abilities. Most interesting is that the Phoenix grants Jean the ability to resurrect herself, something Marvel Rivals has proven capable of thanks to Adam Warlock’s cocoon. This self-resurrection would be devastating in the arsenal of an offense-focused character, seeing as it could let players set up for surprise-attack Ults. Speaking of which, a character’s Ultimate is always the centerpiece of their kit.
At the very least, it should be a trump card that brings out the best of their abilities. One take could see Jean fully tapping into the power of the Phoenix, allowing her to hurl cosmic fire among other buffs to her abilities. However, it seems more likely that the Phoenix would be a fundamental part of her kit rather than a temporary state. With that in mind, it would be equally likely that she passes the power of the Phoenix to her teammates, almost like an offensive equivalent to Luna Snow’s Ultimate. The Phoenix has been able to split among multiple hosts before, such as with The Phoenix Five.
Developers should lift from the most iconic uses of Jean Grey’s abilities, and build on the foundation already laid by other characters. Jean could have a heavy impact on the lore thanks to her importance among the X-Men and on Krakoa, as well as the Phoenix’s influence over the cosmos itself. Jean Grey would have no shortage of costumes either, with the Dark Phoenix and Madelyne Pryor seeming like obvious inspirations. From her kit to beyond, Jean Grey is a perfect fit for Marvel Rivals.
