Summary
In fact, more players are in Grandmaster 3 than both Diamond 3 and Platinum 3, as the distribution of players across all ranks is distressingly flat.
This had led to calls from fans for a rank reset, placement matches, or even a complete reowkr of the ranking system entirely.
Marvel Rivals has been a hot topic for a little while, with its rank distribution in particular catching a lot of heat. Earlier this year, many disliked the idea of a rank reset halfway through the season, accusing NetEase of disrespecting the free time of those that couldn’t consistently play the game. A little while after NetEase reversed course, fans began to admit that it might have been a good idea.
Now that we’re well into Season 1.5, the problem has been laid out more than ever thanks to some new rank distribution stats shared by Reddit user TheMadHa7. In the graph they share (which can also be found on RivalsTracker), it claims that over 10 percent of the 485.3k players analyzed are sitting in Grandmaster.
Grandmaster Is Turning Into The New Platinum
That’s a pretty high percentage for a rank that is supposedly the gateway to facing the best of the best, but it’s made worse when you see that more players are currently in Grandmaster 3 (26,640) than in Diamond 3 (25,459) and even Platinum 3 (26,062). The margins are extremely thin, but it proves how little difference there is in skill between those three ranks at the moment.
A lot of this is down to the fact that Marvel Rivals is a relatively easy game to climb in, as all you really need to do to reach Grandmaster is put the time in. There are a lot of people in that rank with negative win rates, and you can see the numbers dropping as you reach the upper tiers of Grandmaster and Eternity.
Compare the game to something like Overwatch 2, which is a lot harder to climb in, and you’ll see a less surprising pattern. For example, here’s the rank distribution for Season 12 of Overwatch 2 that Reddit user Bullxbull put together, and you can see it’s a lot more like the typical bell curve you usually get in competitive online games, with the majority of players in Gold.
If you’re not into the competitive side of Marvel Rivals, it won’t feel like a huge problem, but lower-skilled players playing in ranks they probably shouldn’t be in isn’t great for anyone. Many are calling for either a rank reset and placement matches, or a complete rework of the ranked system in general to prevent things like this happening in the future. We know that NetEase will listen to feedback, so here’s hoping they’re cooking up something for Season 2.
