Marvel Comics revealed a new deadly iteration of its infamous super-team arriving in comic shops this June. Aptly titled NEW THUNDERBOLTS*, the series brings together Marvel’s most dangerous characters under writer Sam Humphries and artist Ton Lima.
The ongoing series’ June release is perfectly timed, coinciding with the May 2 theatrical release of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*. Fans of both cinematic and comic versions of the notorious team will have content to consume, hopefully along with a batch of new readers, too.
Wolverine, The Hulk, and Eddie Brock Get Recruitment Calls
Bucky Barnes and Black Widow kick off the series after discovering “demented duplicates of the Illuminati” threatening the world. The two assassin-slash-Avengers recruit a team of Marvel’s most volatile vigilantes to confront the new threat they’ve dubbed the “Killuminati.” The all-star, not-all-heroic lineup features Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Eddie Brock as Carnage, The Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Wolverine—characters described in a press release announcement of the project as “the most dangerous loners and antiheroes in the Marvel Universe.”
It’s an objectively impressive lineup of characters for Marvel to assemble in one line. Lima, whose previous work includes West Coast Avengers and Werewolf By Night, agrees, saying, “Look at this lineup… it’s crazy. They’re not here to talk; they jump straight to the action! And that’s the most fun part of drawing. None of them are known for taking it easy on the job, so I can’t either.”
“I love every iteration of Thunderbolts,” NEW THUNDERBOLTS* writer Humphries said. “I’m thrilled to continue the franchise’s proud tradition of hard-hitting action, powder keg personalities, and explosive surprises into a new era.”
“This is a gang of seven of the biggest badasses and loose cannons from different corners of the Marvel Universe. Assembling a super team is like inviting the right combination of guests to a dinner party. So I imagined a dangerous, disastrous, unhinged Marvel dinner party, and went with that.”
The Thunderbolts concept, introduced in 1997, typically features reformed villains or antiheroes taking on missions conventional heroes avoid. The team has seen numerous incarnations over its 28-year history. This newest version hits shelves in June, with no exact date set.
Marvel released cover art from Stephen Segovia alongside a variant cover by Mark Bagley to promote the launch.
