Spider-Man is getting a new ongoing series in 2025, and Marvel’s official synopsis for the debut issue teases that the inaugural arc will feature the return of a member of the Webslinger’s rogue’s gallery that readers haven’t encountered in nearly a decade. Coming off the heels of the pivotal “8 Deaths of Spider-Man arc,” the new series promises a reinvention and a return to basics all at once.

Marvel has revealed minimal details about Amazing Spider-Man #1 – written by Joe Kelly, with art by Pepe Larraz – but it has already hyped the fact that “a major Spider-Villain is working behind the scenes weaponizing other Spider-Villains,” which suggests both short and long-term threats the book’s creative team has planned.

Among the Spidey-Villains being “weaponized,” the synopsis further claims, is one that has not appeared in the comics in over seven years, leaving who exactly it could be for readers to speculate about.

As the synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man #1 reads:

ALIVE & THWIPPING! The next era of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has arrived! Peter is, shockingly, without a job and looking for gainful employment, but his job search is interrupted by a RAMPAGING RHINO who is but the tip of a sinister iceberg. What major Spider-Villain is working behind the scenes weaponizing other Spider-Villains including one we haven’t seen in OVER SEVEN YEARS?! Also, what is that Goblin-free Norman Osborn up to anyway?

With the current “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” storyline, Marvel has sent Peter Parker on a status-quo-upending mystical journey; it seems that with The Amazing Spider-Man, the company will quickly course correct, once more bringing the Webslinger back to familiar touchstones. That said, the teases of mystery villains, and a coordinated plot against Peter, are exciting hooks for the new era of Spider-Man, albeit hooks that long-time fans of the franchise will be familiar with.

Spider-Man is nearly halfway through his “8 Deaths” arc, and I’m concerned that the series isn’t taking full advantage of the story’s potential.

Spider-Man has gone up against countless antagonists over the years. While there are definite A-Listers like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Electro, and so many more, there are also lesser-known ones, like Tombstone and Jackal. It is no surprise that, over the decades, some villains have simply fallen out of favor for the more popular ones. The idea of a Spider-Man villain lurking in the shadows and trying to ruin Peter’s life by manipulating other villains isn’t new. Marvel has been pulling from Spider-Man’s extensive character gallery for decades; they even made an entire storyline about it.

Amazing Spider-Man #1 – Debuts April 25, 2025 From Marvel Comics

One of the biggest examples of Marvel tapping into Spider-Man’s huge character gallery will always be the infamous Clone Saga storyline. In this story, the mad scientist known as the Jackal unleashed clones of every dead person in Peter Parker’s life. This included allies and villains. It was kind of absurd just how many supporting characters Peter had that were killed off, and this was Marvel’s way of bringing them all back. Marvel bringing back a villain who hasn’t been seen in years is nothing new for the company, but speculating on who it is can certainly be fun.

This is the perfect excuse to dip back into Spider-Man lore from a decade ago, to search for clues to who the returning mystery villain could be.

Truthfully, there are so many Spider-Man villains that haven’t been seen in a long time. The returning character, hinted at for Amazing Spider-Man #1, could be a number of different former foes of the Webslinger; patient readers can pick up the first issue of the new series to find out more, but for those too excited to wait, this is the perfect excuse to dip back into Spider-Man lore from a decade ago, to search for clues to who the returning mystery villain could be.

Amazing Spider-Man #1 will be available April 25, 2025 from Marvel Comics.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is the name given to several individuals who have employed a spider-moniker throughout Marvel Comics. Typically gaining their powers through a bite from a radioactive spider, the different Spider-Man heroes employ super-strength, agility, and intellect while utilizing webbing to swing and tangle up their foes. The most notable of these Spider-Men is Peter Parker, who remains one of the most popular superheroes throughout the world.
