Marvel is releasing a cosmic X-Men omnibus.

Moonshadow Definitive Edition coming from Dark Horse.

DC teases the genesis of the Absolute Universe.

This is Comic Book Club News for September 6, 2024.

Normally, Marvel’s Omnibus collections are entire runs of a series. Take, for example, the other day when we reported that all of the classic Web of Spider-Man would be getting an omnibus. However, that’s not what this new one is: it’s a collection of the X-Men’s space adventures, across several decades.

Per ICv2, the Cosmic X-Men Omnibus will run 1,200 pages, and collect everything from 1963’s X-Men #105 to the first five issues of 2022’s Marauders series. Those stories include the classic Dark Phoenix Saga, encounters with the Shi’ar and Brood, and even five issues of 2018’s Mr. and Mrs. X, a short-lived series that sent Rogue and Gambit to space.

The writers included are Chris Claremont, Ed Brubaker, Joss Whedon, Kelly Thompson, and Steve Orlando Artists are Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, Paul Smith, Jim Lee, Billy Tan, Clayton Henry, Philip Tan, John Cassaday, Jan Bazaldua, Eleonora Carlini, and Andrea Broccardo.

The hardcover will hit stores on March 26, 2025, with a cover by Cassaday and a direct market-only cover by Cockrum.

A new edition of J.M. DeMatteis’s Moonshadow is coming from Dark Horse. In fact, it’s The Definitive Edition-Expanded, which seems to defeat the purpose of calling something definitive, but what do I know.

Moonshadow was originally released in 12 issues from 1985 to 1987, and is considered the first fully painted graphic novel. Along with DeMatteis, the book is co-created by artist Jon J Muth, who also provided a new painted cover for the edition.

Per Dark Horse, the book is described as the following: “An unreliable, romantic narrator takes audiences on a coming-of-age journey that is literally out of this world. Interplanetary, mixed-species, Moonshadow recounts his strange birth, his escape from a deep-space zoo, and his struggles to survive in a war-torn universe.”

This new collection will include all 12 issues, the original covers, concept art, notes from the team, script pages, and an illustrated novella titled Farewell Moonshadow.

Moonshadow: The Definitive Edition—Expanded arrives in bookstores on May 6, 2025, and in comic shops on May 7, 2025

DC is giving a glimpse of what’s to come in October’s DC All In Special, thanks to some unlettered pages. And if you don’t want to know any spoilers for what the villainous Darkseid is up to, turn away now.

In the pages, Darkseid first chops off his own hand with an axe, and then replaces his hand with said axe. That’s closely followed by the leader of Apokolips taking over the powers of the Spectre. And it’s all followed by axe-hand Spectre-Darkseid fighting pretty much every hero in the DC Universe, all at the same time.

So how does this lead to the Absolute Universe? We know that Darkseid will die in this battle, and then in some way gestate inside the Absolute Universe. Perhaps he has to die in style, first? We’ll know more when the DC All In Special drops in stores on October 2.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And I want an axe hand, that looks so cool.
