The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #8, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s latest team of Ultimate heroes may have just revealed the tragic end of their entire universe.

The Ultimates #8 marks the beginning of a whole new chapter for the reality of Earth-6160, better known as the current Ultimate Universe, as the introduction of its very own Guardians of the Galaxy comes with plenty of shocking revelations. Apart from America Chavez’ discovery that she is in fact one of the greatest heroes of the 61st century like the rest of the Guardians, she also learns that her former teammates already know precisely where the Ultimates’ efforts will lead them. Unfortunately, that is nowhere good, as it is not the Ultimates, but the Maker who is destined to stand as the victor when the two forces collide once more.

The Guardians of the Galaxy of Earth-6160 are just the latest in a long line of teams to have taken up that title, the first of which were introduced all the way back in 1968’s Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in Arnold Drak and Gene Colan’s opening story, “The Earth Shal Overcome!” Consisting of Major Vance Astro, Martinex, Yondu, and Charlie-27, the original Guardians of the Galaxy faced off against all manner of interstellar threats, most prominently that of the Badoon Empire. In the years since their debut, the original Guardians of the Galaxy have been a part of numerous major storylines, albeit without the same staying power as their more popular successors.

The version of the Guardians of the Galaxy that fans know best had more humble beginnings in the pages of Marvel Comics, with the earliest iteration of Peter Quill’s iconic team being formed as a band of freedom fighters known as the Kree Squad in 2007’s Annihilation: Conquest – Starlord #1 by Keith Giffen and Timothy Green II. This modern lineup of Guardians has amassed dozens of members in the years since they were first formed. As of now, the current primary Guardians of the Galaxy lineup still have Star-Lord to call their leader, while the likes of Rocket Raccoon, Phyla-Vell, Mantis, and over a half-dozen other fan-favorite heroes round out the team.

The new Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy, led by Captain Marvel, consist of powerhouses Cosmos Starstalker, the Ultimate Nullifier, and their very own reality-bending Star-Lord. As their Captain Marvel explains, they only survived the Maker’s rewriting of their reality by piloting their spacecraft outside of ordinary space and time. While this bought them a chance at survival, it also brought them into conflict with the army of Kangs who were waiting for them, leaving a corps of hundreds of thousands reduced to just a handful of members who managed to escape the onslaught with their lives intact.
