In Marvel‘s latest series, Spider-Man’s suit colors are inspired by Captain America, and it’s a change that makes so much sense. Spider-Man has worn many suits throughout his comic book and cinematic history. Some popular examples of his alternate suits include the symbiote suit, and “The Amazing Bag-Man,” which consisted of an old Fantastic Four suit with a paper bag on his head. However, Spider-Man will always be associated with his classic red and blue suit, which he’s worn since his earliest comic book appearances.

Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland’s versions of Spider-Man have slight suit variations, but each one has the same color scheme – with a few deviations. It’s what audiences recognize and is a defining trait of the Marvel hero. While red and blue have become irreplaceable parts of Spider-Man’s identity, the early comics and films don’t explain why Peter Parker chose these colors. Marvel’s latest animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, connects his suit colors to Captain America, and it’s an explanation I can’t believe Marvel hasn’t done sooner.

Why Spider-Man’s Suit Is Red And Blue In The Comics And Movies

Spider-Man Comics And Movies Have Experimented With The Origin Behind His Suit Colors

Spider-Man has always worn red and blue since his Marvel Comics debut, but the color scheme was never fully explained. In Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man, Maguire and Garfield’s Peter Parkers were inspired by professional wrestling. While the suits are not directly tied to any specific wrestler, wrestling costumes are typically flashy and use bright, eye-catching colors, like red and blue. In Captain America: Civil War, Holland’s Spider-Man used the color scheme in his amateur suit and Tony Stark used it in the suit he designed.

In the comics, Peter did start as a wrestler but didn’t use red and blue initially. He dons his red and blue suit later but with little explanation behind his color choices. However, other Spider-Man comics have created origins for his suit colors. In 2023’s Ultimate Spider-Man series, Peter Parker doesn’t become Spider-Man until he’s an adult and a parent with his wife, Mary Jane Watson. His daughter, May, draws him a picture of a red and blue spider, inspiring Peter to use those colors in his suit.

All told, the exact origin of Spider-Man’s suit colors has been included in the Garfield and Maguire movies, as well as in the comics, but it was never properly explained in the MCU. Certainly, the reason behind the color scheme may not be quite as integral to the superhero’s origin story as the spider that gives him powers or the death of Uncle Ben – both of which the MCU also skipped over – but it’s worth depicting. In Marvel’s latest story about Spider-Man’s origin, they gave Peter Parker a new reason for his blue and red suit.

Peter Designs His suit To Honor One Of His Heroes

I’ve never questioned why Spider-Man’s suit is red and blue, but this series made me question why Marvel has never used the Captain America connection. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man doesn’t star Holland as it is set in an alternate universe. However, it does feature a surprising number of MCU events. The Avengers exist in this universe and several events from the Infinity Saga have occurred, including the Chitauri invasion of New York and the battle with Ultron in Sokovia.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man features a range of different suits for Peter Parker to try out with plenty of varying powers and styles.

The attack on Sokovia leads to the events of Captain America: Civil War and Captain America becomes a fugitive of the U.S. government. However, Peter isn’t deterred by Cap’s rebellion and suggests using his colors to add flair to his suit. This also creates a bonding moment between Peter and Harry Osborn. The early Spider-Man comics existed in their isolated universe, so it made sense that Peter didn’t find inspiration from Steve Rogers. However, I’m shocked Marvel hasn’t used this in a Spider-Man origin story until now.

Spider-Man’s Suit Colors Never Made Sense Anyway

Red And Blue Don’t Exactly Scream Spider Colors

Captain America’s connection to Spider-Man’s suit colors is a sensible explanation since red and blue don’t make sense for a spider-based superhero. Captain America wears red and blue since he represents America, and the same can be said for DC’s Superman, who originally represented “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” (though his catchphrase has been updated to the more universal “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow”). While Spider-Man isn’t labeled as a symbol of patriotism, his admiration for Captain America justifies his color choices.

Red and blue are an odd color scheme for Spider-Man as they don’t represent spiders well. The symbiote suit is actually a more accurate color choice for Spider-Man since most people associate black with spiders. Imagine if Batman wore green and purple, rather than black and gray. That wouldn’t make you think of bats, would it? Maguire’s Spider-Man justifies this color choice better by designing the spider that bit Peter a red and blue posterior. Still, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s Captain America connection might be the best explanation yet.
