Summary

Wolverine’s potential future in the MCU as a member of the Avengers is explored in the upcoming LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red special. While the special is not canonical to the MCU, it showcases the possibility of Wolverine joining the Avengers due to his unique skills and background. With the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU, a new actor will likely be cast as Wolverine, and it remains to be seen how his story will intertwine with the Avengers.

Marvel just showed how Wolverine could fit perfectly in the MCU as a member of the Avengers. Although Wolverine is traditionally one of the X-Men in the original comics, he’s also had quite the tenure as an Avenger as well. As such, a new Disney+ special will serve as a proof-of-concept for this idea where Wolverine could become a sort of bridge between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the X-Men in the MCU.

As seen in the new trailer for LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red, a dynamic roster of brick-built Avengers are assembling to take on the Collector who’s started collecting superheroes, having begun with Red Guardian. Styled after their MCU counterparts, these LEGO Avengers conclude that they’re going to need some backup from a hero with special skills, someone who’s the best at what he does. As such, much of the trailer is predominantly focused on Wolverine’s debut and recruitment into the Avengers which in turn generates some interesting ideas about Wolverine’s future in the actual MCU.

Will Wolverine Join The MCU’s Avengers?

While LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red is by no means canonical to the MCU, there’s clearly an MCU-inspired aesthetic seen in both the world and characters featured in the upcomingDisney+ special. Although there’s no guarantee that the MCU’s Wolverine will follow suit and join the Avengers when he officially makes his debut in the interconnected universe, the potential is evident. After all, the whole point of the Avengers is to bring together remarkable heroes with all sorts of different powers and backgrounds to become something bigger. Keeping that in mind, it’s not out of the question for the Avengers to eventually bring a mutant aboard.

While he’ll always be an X-Man first, Wolverine did join up with the New Avengers in the comics back in 2005, joining an initial roster comprised of Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, Sentry, and Echo (Disguised as Ronin). Ultimately, it was Iron Man who convinced Wolverine to join, believing that the team needed someone who could make tough calls and go places the others couldn’t. As such, it would certainly be interesting to see an MCU version of Wolverine bring the same advantages to the Avengers on-screen.

Who Could Play Wolverine In The MCU

Set to make his epic return in the upcoming Deadpool 3 movie from Marvel Studios, there have been hopes that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will be in Avengers: Secret Wars as well, the final Multiverse Saga crossover film which will likely bring several timelines and realities together. In this way, Wolverine fighting alongside the Avengers in the MCU is a strong possibility. However, it’s been widely theorized that Secret Wars’s aftermath will feature both a universal reboot and the X-Men’s official introduction in the MCU.

As a result, a new Wolverine will likely be cast for the future, one who could join the X-Men and/or the Avengers just as the character has done in the original Marvel Comics. While there’s been nothing in the way of confirmed casting, Daniel Radcliffe and Taron Egerton have both been popular names for years. At any rate, it will be very interesting to see what Marvel Studios’ plans are for the future of Wolverine in the MCU, especially regarding any potential ties with the Avengers themselves.
