The Ultimate Universehas revealed a brand-new way that Marvel Comics could potentially reignite a steamy yet divisive X-Men romance, as their version of Wolverinemight be introduced to Earth-6160’s own Jean Greyvery soon. While the mystery of Ultimate Wolverine is still being unraveled, theories are swirling about the fan-favorite mutants that might be making their Ultimate debut, and what their relationships with the new Winter Soldier could entail.

Ultimate Wolverine #1 – written by Chris Condon, with art by Alessandro Cappuccio – offers a subtle suggestion of a romantic reunion between the two characters under devastating circumstances. The love triangle between Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Wolverine has been long-standing in X-Men comics, and although Scott and Jean are more often paired up, there are several alternate universes where Logan is her true love.

Wolverine has his memory wiped and is brainwashed by Directorate X into hunting mutants in the Ultimate Universe, but he’s not the only one, as a secret telepath is also teased to be under their control.

With many telepaths to be pulled from X-Men comics, it’s not confirmed that Jean Grey is definitely the one in the possession of Directorate X, but it would certainly make for an interesting twist to their classic love affair and its origin. After years of the love between them being teased in main continuity, and multiple timelines featuring them as a full-fledged couple, the Ultimate Universe’s take on the Jean Grey and Wolverine relationship has the potential to be the most exciting, or horrifying, yet. Both under control of the villainous Maker’s Council, they could become Marvel’s deadliest couple ever.

10 Strangest Romances In X-Men Comics

The X-Men in general have a lot of strange storylines in the Marvel comics, so it is no surprise that there have also been some odd relationships.

Wolverine’s violent first mission as the Winter Soldier is made possible by the brainwashing from Directorate X, but depending on how capable this secret government division is, they could even be harnessing Jean Grey’s telepathy to help cloud Logan’s mind. If Jean and Wolverine are both in this torturous situation together, romance might be the least of their concerns, but it would still be fascinating to see their partnership form in some way. With all the founding X-Men still missing in this universe so far, there’s an exciting opportunity for Wolverine and Jean’s relationship to flourish in an all-new origin.

Is Marvel Recreating The Super-Spy Romance With Two X-Men Icons?

Wolverine is replacing Bucky Barnes as the Winter Soldier on Earth-6160, so it seems entirely possible that the Eurasian Republic’s secret government division could have the Ultimate Universe’s version of Black Widow up their sleeve as well. With Natasha Romanoff also absent from this universe so far, Jean Grey could be replacing the super-spy as the Ultimate Black Widow. Since the Winter Soldier and Black Widow have been known for their own romantic flings in the past, the updated Jean and Logan relationship could be a fun play on both Marvel power couples.

If the Ultimate Universe does indeed have their own version of Jean Grey locked up alongside Wolverine, it could be a brilliant opportunity to give their fiery romance a shocking new origin.

Directorate X’s telepath prisoner hasn’t really been revealed yet, meaning this is all just speculation, but it would be an exciting way to introduce a fan-favorite hero to Earth-6160. If Jean is somehow tied to the Phoenix Force here, which has been revealed as part of the universe’s future by the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy, she could possibly be too powerful to contain. However, if the Ultimate Universe does indeed have their own version of Jean Grey locked up alongside Wolverine, it could be a brilliant opportunity to give their fiery romance a shocking new origin.
