A new Marvel series, House of Harkness, is sending Scarlet Witch back to school with Agatha Harkness. The student/mentor relationship between Agatha and Wanda has become well-known among fans as the former made Scarlet Witch who she is today, while also maintaining an interesting adversity that reshaped Marvel’s magic universe. Now, an interesting new spin is being put on the characters as they become the bitterest rivals while going back to school.

According to Marvel, House of Harkness is a brand-new series by Preeti Chhibber and Jodi Nishijima that introduces Agatha Harkness as “the queen bee” of a magic academy “run by her family for the last sixteen generations.” However, when Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, officially enrolls, her world is turned upside down as the two “shake the very foundations of the institution they call home.”

The series will be exclusively published through Marvel Unlimited as one of its various Infinity Comics, with issue one of the alternate universe high school story available now.

House of Harkness Gives the Iconic Marvel Magic Duo a High School Spin

Marvel’s Magic Universe Gets a New Look

What’s interesting about House of Harkness is how much it dives into the high school narrative. Based on the premise alone, it seems to take a lot of influence from the film Mean Girls, as Scarlet Witch finds herself dealing with Harkness and her bossiness after years of entitlement. However, it also dives into other tropes of the subgenre such as romance, which writer Preeti Chhibber anticipates readers to love the most in their interview with Marvel.com, and the magical school setting typically found in YA fiction like Harry Potter.

What’s even more appealing about House of Harkness‘ high school inspirations is how many iconic Marvel characters are along for the ride. Joining Wanda and Agatha at the school will be other beloved magic users such as Doctor Strange and Loki, and they appear to fit the mold of a high school story perfectly. The concept art for Loki in particular highlights just how mischievous he’ll be, as his design is hilariously described as wearing “the uniform mostly wrong.” It will be interesting to see how they play into Wanda and Agatha’s story as the comics continue.

Wanda’s Story Sets Up a Relatable Coming-of-Age Tale

Scarlet Witch Faces Challenges Not Even Magic Can Solve

“None of [Wanda’s training] can prepare her for the social climate that comes with being in high school.”

Perhaps the most fascinating element of this new series is Wanda herself and how she plays into the high school narrative without her protégé. When she arrives at her new home, she’s described by Chhibber as “self-trained and has a natural talent.” However, none of this can prepare her for the social climate that comes with being in high school. It will be interesting to see how she tries to fit in with her peers, which can be a very relatable topic for younger readers.

Fans can dive into this new take on some of Marvel’s best magic users now through Marvel Unlimited, with more issues on the way. It’s a perfect read for those who love high school dramas with a bit of humor and romance while also working in the magic element that readers have come to love, especially with the upcoming series Agatha All Along on the horizon. It’s a great new way to re-evaluate with relationship between Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness as they start down a fresh new path as rivals in the ultimate social battleground.
