Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Aliens vs. Avengers #3
It looks as though Marvel Comics is never going to let Iron Man retire. While it’s nice to imagine a day when Tony Stark might be able to retire and put away his armor for good, the MCU helped prove that Iron Man was never going to be able to rest until he gave everything to save the world and those he cared about. Now, the comics are backing up this idea with their newest “Old Man Tony” variant of the Armored Avenger.
In Marvel’s Aliens vs Avengers crossover series by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, an elderly Iron Man is joined by Carol Danvers and Miles Morales as some of Earth’s last surviving heroes who barely made it off the planet with the remnants of Earth’s population (thanks to Captain America and Hulk’s sacrifice who died buying them time). Now, their ship has landed on Mars in need of fuel, repairs, and supplies, only to find the home of mutantkind deserted. Wanting to determine what happened, the seemingly wheelchair-bound Tony Stark proves he’s not as helpless as one might have assumed:
With one simple transformation from a wheelchair to a suit of armor, this new story certainly supports the idea that the main Tony Stark will also strive to be Iron Man for as long as he can in the primary Marvel Universe.
Iron Man Is Never Going To Retire In The Marvel Universe
He’s Going To Keep On Fighting As Long As He Can
While it can arguably be chalked up to a mixture of pride and ego blended with his heroism, Iron Man usually thinks he’s got the best ideas and solutions for how to save the day. After all, he is a futurist, and he’s dedicated his life to expecting the best while preparing for the worst, hence his countless designs and full halls of armor. Ever since his origins and the accident that turned his life around, Tony Stark has been determined to leave the world better than he found it, while also leaving behind a lasting legacy.
With that in mind, it’s no wonder that this alternate Marvel Universe’s Tony Stark never stopped being Iron Man, even before David 8 and his clones arrived to infect the planet with xenomorphs as they have with countless worlds and realities. While Wade Wilson was referring to Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine, the “Till He’s 90″ sentiment applies just as much to Iron Man. If it’s up to Tony Stark, it certainly seems as though he intends to die wearing one of his Iron Man suits.
Sadly, Iron Man’s Armor Couldn’t Save Him From A Xenomorph Horde
Killed By A Chestburster
Case in point, this variant of Iron Man does indeed lose his life by the end of Aliens vs Avengers #3. Having been ambushed by a horde of xenomorphs, Carol was separated from Iron Man and Miles but was saved by the last few surviving X-Men, only to find Tony dead the next day, having been killed via a chestburster. It’s a brutally tragic end for any Iron Man, and one can only hope the primary Iron Man’s demise will be far kinder.
Aliens vs Avengers #3 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Alien
The Alien franchise, which began with Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, is a Sci-Fi series comprised of several horror films, games, and comic books centered on humanity’s encounters with a hostile extraterrestrial species known as Xenomorphs. Characterized by their lethal prowess and capability to reproduce at an alarming rate, these creatures pose a profound threat to human existence. The primary series protagonist, Ellen Ripley, acts as the voice of reason as she seeks to keep the creatures out of the hands of greed-driven corporate scientists.
The sixth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Avengers is an action superhero film that sees the heroes assembled across the franchise face off with a deadly galactic threat. With the arrival of Thor’s brother, Loki, heroes such as Captain America, The Hulk, Iron Man, and Black Widow are brought together to stop him from unleashing an alien race upon earth.
