The following contains spoilers for “Weapon VIII” from
Edge of Spider-Verse
#1, on sale February 21 from Marvel Comics.
Marvel Comics’ Edge of Spider-Verse is bringing Weapon X down.
Edge of Spider-Verse #1’s opening story, “Weapon VIII” by writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, artist Travel Foreman, and colorist Brian Reber, finds Wolverine on the run through a snowy forest. While the remnants of the equipment he was hooked up to as part of the Weapon Plus project indicate exactly what period this story is set in, the introduction of the spider-like Weapon VIII makes it clear that this is far from the same story fans of Wolverine know best.

Marvel Comics’ original Spider-Verse event kicked off with the Multiverse spanning Amazing Spider-Man #9 by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel. Published in 2014, the issue introduced a slew of new Spider-Totems, including alternate versions of Ben Reilly and Peter Parker as their worlds’ Spider-Man and Captain Universe, respectively. The heroes were brought together to face off against the threat of near-immortal Inheritors such as Morlun, who subsisted off of the life forces and energies of those who carried within them a totemic spirit.
Edge of Spider-Verse has served to introduce even more Spider-Totems to the Marvel Multiverse since the first volume debuted in 2014, with a variety of writers and artists crafting characters that have largely become instant hits with fans. One of the best-known is Spider-Man Noir, who first appeared in the very first issue of Edge of Spider-Verse by writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky and artist Richard Isanove. Only one issue later, writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez would introduce their own fan-favorite creation in the form of an alternate Gwen Stacy, originally billed as her world’s Spider-Woman, now colloquially referred to as Spider-Gwen.

Spider-Man is taking on Doctor Octopus once more for control of his mind and body — on a battlefield both of them are very familiar with.
The current, fourth volume of Edge of Spider-Verse, like its predecessors, is an anthology series offering readers glimpses into a myriad of alternate realities, each of which is home to its own unique Spider-Totem. While Weapon XIII is the first among them, the issue also stars the digitized Spider-Byte in the story “The Glitch” by writer Nilah Magruder and artist Eric Gapstur, as well as Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099, in writer Alex Segura and artist Salvador Larroca’s “Prologue.”
