In a major upgrade, the Hulk just unlocked a range of new powers – as well as an uncharacteristic silver sheen. In the past, Hulk fans have met grey Hulks, red Hulks and even blue Hulks, but they’ve never seen a Silver Hulk before. That’s a good thing, because it’s unlikely the universe could survive two of them. Here’s everything we know about the powers and origin of this new Hulk.

The Silver Hulk Commands the Power Cosmic

Galactus Turned Hulk into the New Silver Surfer

The Silver Hulk debuts in What If…? Galactus Transformed Hulk #1 from Mat Groom, Lan Medina, Juancho Veléz and Travis Lanham. The comic reveals that this Hulk exists in a timeline where Galactus came to Bruce Banner, recruiting the genius scientist as his herald. Banner is tasked with leading Galactus to worlds that the cosmic predator intends to devour for their energy, with the promise that thanks to this role, the Hulk will never again be able to hurt anyone who isn’t already doomed.

The Avengers directed Galactus to Hulk, trading Bruce Banner in order to buy the Earth more time…

Ever the hero, Bruce uses his new cosmic powers to send ahead designs for life-saving ships that can get the planets’ inhabitants off-world, sparing them from Galactus’ wrath – something his new master allows so long as it doesn’t interfere with his official duties. Sadly, the ships can’t save everyone, and Bruce is beaten down by watching world after world die, with Galactus’ victims unleashing the Silver Hulk when they try to fight back.

Silver Hulk’s Powers Explained

The New Hulk Takes Down Captain Marvel Without Blinking

Having been imbued with the Power Cosmic, Bruce Banner is able to fly through space and beam his thoughts across the galaxy. However, the Silver Hulk can do far more. Possessing all his prior powers, the Hulk also commands total control over cosmic energy. He can unleash explosive blasts and absorb energy, robbing Captain Marvel of her powers in an instant. He’s also able to strike intangible foes like the Vision, with his punches unleashing bomb-like explosions of energy. This is the Hulk at the height of his rage and power, now enhanced with the powers of the Silver Surfer.

Beating the Avengers also reveals the missing piece of Hulk’s origin. Defeated, Iron Man admits that – similar to the events leading up to the World War Hulk event – the Avengers directed Galactus to Hulk, trading Bruce Banner in order to buy the Earth more time. The team believed that Hulk was so destructive, it was better to send him out into the cosmos. Tony Stark admits they were wrong, begging Bruce to look at the destruction and death he’s been party to, and reminding him of a vital truth: “the Hulk has no master.”

The Avengers Are the Reason Silver Hulk Exists

Now He’s Taking the Fight to Galactus

The issue ends with the Silver Hulk launching himself into space, intent on bringing down Galactus. It’s likely he’s more than up to the task, given that Silver Surfer has hurt Galactus before using his cosmic powers, even without the Hulk’s added strength. What If…? Galactus Transformed Hulk #1 is a one-shot comic, so there’s no official plan to see the Silver Hulk throw down with Galactus, however there are lots of avenues to do so.

What If…? Galactus Transformed… is a new initiative with each issue featuring a different hero in their own timeline, including Gambit and Spider-Gwen. It’s possible future issues will bring the Silver Hulk back into play. Alternatively, Marvel may be gauging fan interest to see which – if any – of these new heralds to bring back. With epic designs courtesy of Silver Surfer artist Ron Lim, hopefully Silver Hulk will make a comeback alongside all the other Galactus Transformed… heroes.

In Marvel’s big, wide multiverse, there’s always room for a good idea to live on, and the Power Cosmic-enhanced Silver Hulk is definitely one of them. Hopefully, this ultra-powerful (former) herald of Galactus gets a second act, because Silver Hulk vs Galactus is a cosmos-shaking throwdown every fan deserves to see.

What If…? Galactus Transformed Hulk #1 is available from Marvel Comics now.
