Marvel fans looking to replay one of the franchise’s most beloved video games may soon have an opportunity to do so on Steam. Thanks to various licensing disputes and trademark agreements, it’s become increasingly harder to track down and play some of Marvel’s older video games. Popular titles like Deadpool, Ultimate Spider-Man, and X-Men: Origins Wolverine are impossible to play on PC or current-generation consoles through conventional means, relegating them to older consoles that most modern players likely can’t access, but that may soon change.

Posted to Reddit by SpidermanAlways, the user shared images of Steam recommending Marvel Ultimate Alliance, a classic beat-em-up that was quietly removed from the digital storefront in 2018. It’s certainly an odd discovery, especially given the recent rumors that Microsoft is working with Activision to bring several of its older games to modern hardware. While this isn’t the first time Steam has recommended a game that’s currently unavailable on the service, the timing is suspicious, prompting the community to hope for an imminent announcement regarding the game’s return.

Could The Classic Marvel Games Return?

It Certainly Sounds Like A Great Idea

As with all reports of this nature, it’s recommended that fans take the rumor with a grain of salt. While SpidermanAlways did share a screenshot of their discovery, it’s not undeniable proof and until such a time as Microsoft or Activision confirm the game’s return, it’s best to remain skeptical. Having said that, it does make sense that Microsoft would want to take full advantage of Activision’s massive catalog of games as a means of bolstering its current portfolio.

Given the dominance of superhero media, allowing players to access older titles would be a great way to generate excitement and goodwill in the community. Preservation has become an important point of discussion for the video game industry as many publishers are looking to the past to provide players with nostalgia. The success of Aspyr’s recent efforts to remaster many older Star Wars games proves that there’s a demand for the classics.
