Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay #2! Mjolnir has famously been Thor’s strongest weapon and greatest ally throughout Marvel Comics history, and even in the MCU. However, that shouldn’t suggest that Mjolnir can never be turned against Thor. In fact, another MCU icon just defeated the God of Thunder shockingly easily during the Avengers’ most recent mission to save the world in Marvel Comics, and he did so by turning Mjolnir against him.

In Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay #2 by Thomas Krajewski and Jason Muhr, the Avengers have become infected by an alien virus that turns them all into plant-like zombies (reminiscent of the zombies featured in The Last of Us). The one who brought this ‘zombie virus’ to Earth is Groot, who merely exhibited symptoms of a common cold – sneezing, runny nose, etc. However, after Groot accidentally sneezes all over Captain America, covering him in ‘mucus’, Rogers slowly begins to mutate into a plant-like zombie before promptly infecting the other Avengers.

Before long, the zombie virus Groot brought to Earth infected everyone in New York City, including one Avenger whose godly might wasn’t enough to fend off infection: Thor. Thor’s zombified status leads to a fight between himself and the Hulk before Groot intervenes. In an effort to end the fight, Groot uses his vines as rope, tying one end to Mjolnir and the other to a nearby tank. When Thor called upon Mjolnir, he unexpectedly had a tank flying at him as well, pinning the God of Thunder to the ground as he continued to mutate, trapping him there indefinitely.

Groot has the Potential to become an Entity Capable of Consuming Entire Planets

Groot defeated Thor by outmaneuvering him in Dawn of Decay – adding insult to injury by weaponizing Mjolnir against him – but one of the latest Guardians of the Galaxy comic runs confirms that Groot could very well have beat Thor the old fashion way. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 7, Groot takes on a terrifying new form called Grootspace, transforming into a gargantuan cosmic beast capable of consuming and assimilating entire planets.

If Groot tapped into even a fraction of his Grootspace form, then it’s safe to say that Thor wouldn’t stand a chance against him. Groot would simply overtake the God of Thunder, cutting him off from Mjolnir or any other weapon Thor has access to before crushing him beneath the immeasurable weight of Groot’s planet-sized form. While it is possible that Groot could overpower Thor, Dawn of Decay proves that isn’t necessary, as Groot can defeat the God of Thunder with nothing more than his wits alone.

Groot Isn’t the First MCU Hero to Use Mjolnir Against Thor

Moon Knight Humiliates Thor with Mjolnir in Avengers Vol. 8 #33

Groot may be the latest MCU hero to use Mjolnir against Thor, but he certainly isn’t the first. In Avengers #33, Moon Knight absolutely humiliates Thor with Mjolnir while the two were fighting on the moon. Since Mjolnir is made of Uru and was forged on Nidavellir (which roughly translates to “new moon”), it’s technically made of ‘moon rock’, meaning Moon Knight was able to control it. So, when Thor attacked him, Moon Knight quickly took control over Mjolnir and beat Thor to a pulp with his own weapon and easily defeated him.

Thor explains that Iron Man is the most iconic hero in Marvel Comics, and the reason why comes from the very nature of Midgard among the Ten Realms.

It seems Mjolnir isn’t as reliable a weapon for Thor as Marvel Comics fans thought it was, as a number of other characters have been able to use it against him. And now, Groot is the latest to do so, as this MCU icon easily beat Thor by effectively turning Mjolnir against him.

Associated with the mythical realm of Asgard, Thor is a Marvel Comics hero who channels the power of thunder to slay their foes. Though the name is chiefly tied to Thor Odinson, several other characters also take on the role of God of Thunder, including Odinson’s love interest, Jane Foster. Odin is portrayed as a physically imposing hero with incredible strength and typically wields the dwarven forged hammer, Mjolnir.
