Warning: contains spoilers for Incredible Hulk #12!
For anyone to be able to defeat the Hulk is a big deal, and one former member of the Avengers did it almost effortlessly–and in a gross fashion. As the Hulk continues his fight against the Mother of All Horrors, his journey takes him to Strange Academy in Incredible Hulk #12. There, a former Avenger shows his true power to the Hulk, taking him out in seconds.
Incredible Hulk #12 is written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and drawn by Nic Klein. In a previous issue, the soul of Hulk’s new friend Charlie was imprisoned, and he travels to Strange Academy seeking Doctor Strange’s help in freeing her. Upon arriving at the school, Doctor Voodoo informs the Hulk that Strange is out. The Hulk flies into a rage, but Doctor Voodoo is not phased.
Instead, he forces a transformation on the Hulk, causing him to revert to his Bruce Banner form.
Doctor Voodoo Is A Powerful Sorcerer, Second Only to Doctor Strange
Doctor Voodoo’s Appearance Keeps Incredible Hulk’s Horror Tone Going
Doctor Voodoo making quick work of the Hulk should come as no surprise to fans, as he is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the Marvel Universe. Like Doctor Doom or Baron Mordo, Doctor Voodoo is a perennial runner-up for the title of Sorcerer Supreme. He even held the title for a brief period in the late aughts. Doctor Voodoo was also briefly affiliated with the Avengers, both the main team and the Savage Avengers. In recent years, Doctor Voodoo has served as the Headmaster for Strange Academy. Here, he helps guide the next generation of sorcerers.
Doctor Voodoo, then called “Brother Voodoo” first appeared in 1973’s
Strange Tales
#169
The transformation that Doctor Voodoo forced on the Hulk continues a trend running through Johnson and Klein’s Incredible Hulk: gruesome transformations. Anytime Banner changes into the Hulk, it is not a pleasant experience for him, but Johnson and Klein have dialed it up. The transformations Klein has drawn rank as the most brutal in the character’s history: bones break and skin tears. Now, in Incredible Hulk #12, the change from Banner back into the Hulk is just as gross and unsettling. Voodoo literally pulls Banner out of the Hulk’s body.
Hulk’s Terrifying Villain NEPHELE Is His Evil Opposite (In a Way That Actually Matters)
Hulk’s new villain, Nephele, is his true opposite, not because she’s an evil monster with equal strength to Hulk, but in a way that actually matters.
Doctor Voodoo Has One Up on Doctor Strange
Doctor Voodoo Has Shown Why He is a Great Sorcerer
The Hulk comes to New Orleans seeking Doctor Strange, but gets more than he bargained for with Doctor Voodoo. Voodoo’s handling of the situation shows why he is a serious contender for Sorcerer Supreme and why he was an Avenger. He used his magical abilities to discern the Hulk’s true nature. Voodoo guessed there were two (or more) souls in the Hulk, and he used this to his advantage. Voodoo was able to take the Hulk off the table in seconds without even breaking a sweat. Doctor Strange would be hard-pressed to duplicate such a feat.
