From the ashes of the Krakoan Age, Marvel announced the relaunch of the X-Men titles, now under the editorship of longtime Marvel editor, Tom Brevoort, at a panel at South by Southwest (SXSW) titled “From the Ashes, the Future of the X-Men Revealed!” The three flagship X-Men titles will be X-Men by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman, Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez, and Exceptional X-Men by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero.
More titles also part of the X-Men relaunch were announced [Storm, X-Force, X-Factor, Wolverine, NYX and Phoenix], but only their titles were announced today. We’ll learn details and creative teams for those series in the near future. In the meantime, these three books will mark the three “core” X-Men team books. As Brevoort noted in a press release, “[A]ll three titles carrying the name X-MEN are core X-MEN series—they all center around one of the major aspects of what the team has been about at different points. This is very much by design. We want to field a wide assortment of X-titles with different styles and tones and approaches, an X-MEN book for virtually any taste.”

Who are the members of the three new core X-Men teams?
Which cities are these new teams based out of?
In MacKay and Stegman’s X-Men, Cyclops will lead a group of X-Men stationed in Alaska. His team will consist of Beast, Magneto, Psylocke, Kid Omega Temper (formerly known as Oya), Magik and Juggernaut, and they will be, according to Marvel, “battling for the destiny and philosophy of the mutant species.”
In Simone and Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men, Rogue will lead a team of outlaw superheroes in New Orleans. Her team will consist of Gambit, Nightcrawler, Jubilee and Wolverine, and they will be more of your standard “heroes fighting to protect those that hate and fear them” type of X-Men. The lineup, of course, also evokes the X-Men animated series’ mixture of core heroes.
Finally, in Ewing and Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men, Kate Pryde will become a teacher to mutants again in Chicago, working with three new young mutants named Bronze, Axo and Melee. However, Emma Frost is also interested in guiding these young mutants, and so the two X-Men greats must discover a way to work together, sort of like classic Generation X.
REVIEW: Fall of the House of X #3 Is Explosive, Dynamic, & Just Too Much
A major twist midway through a nearly victorious battle prolongs the already chaotic Fall of X arc.
When will these three new titles be released?
Ewing was quoted in the press release about Exceptional X-Men as noting:
Long-time fans of Kitty Pryde can count on the kinds of adventures you expect from her as a classic favorite, while I hope new and old readers alike will get to love this all-new team of young mutants. Kitty, the one-time kid sister figure of the X-Men, has to reckon with her own memories—good and bad—of being a child of Xavier as she navigates a role as leader and mentor for a new generation of mutants who are trying to make their way in a time of crisis. I always try to strike a chord between appealing to veteran comics fans and new readers, but since so many people fell in love with the X-Men as teens and this book is about a team of young folks, that feels especially important to me here. I hope that for some 13- or 14-year-old readers, this might be the first comic book they pick up. Working on this series has been a ton of fun already, as Carmen Carnero’s art is bringing so much dynamism to these pages and the entire X-team of writers is in a flurry sharing scripts and feedback and ideas.
X-Men #1 will be the first to launch, coming July 10th. Then Uncanny X-Men #1 will be released on August 7th, and finally, Exceptional X-Men will hit the comic racks on September 4th.
