Marvel announces our new, non-binary Hawkeye

Marvel’s rebooted Ultimate universe has welcomed another new hero to its ranks, a new Hawkeye who isn’t a variant of Clint Barton.

Despite having no powers but a lot of skill, Hawkeye has been an important part of The Avengers for many years now, with an assortment of arrows to use against even the biggest bads in the Marvel multiverse

However in the new Ultimate comics, Clint Barton is not Hawkeye, in fact hardly any of the heroes we know and love have taken up their respective mantles.

If you’ve been out of the loop the new Ultimate storyline takes place in a universe where heroes are a rarity, as a variant of Reed Richards called The Maker rewrote reality to ensure only certain superheroes came into existence.

For example Spider-Man was never bitten by the radioactive spider, and the Fantastic 4 never formed, but the Reed Richards of that universe lived on to become a good version of Doctor Doom.

These changes have given rise to new heroes as a result, like Charli Ramsey who’s taken on the mantle of Hawkeye after Barton refused it.

Charli is confirmed to be non-binary, and comes from the Oglala Band of the Native American Lakota Nation tribe.

When asked to comment on Charli’s gender writer Deniz Camp said “when I did my research into the water protectors/Standing Rock, something that was emphasised again and again was the importance of queer and ‘two-spirit’ organisers to the movement. I wanted to put that into the book.”

Camp went on to say they “didn’t want to make a big deal of” Charli’s pronouns, and that it’ll only come into importance when it’s “natural to the narrative.”

Who knows, if Charli proves to be a popular version of Hawkeye we might see them make their live-action debut in a future MCU project.
