Visual Effects made several movies stand out as special as the directors could show exactly whatever in their deepest minds envisioned for a scene. James Cameron is known for his reliance on VFX to produce stunning masterpieces in his career, from recreating the epic disaster in Titanic through CGI to giving birth to the astonishing sci-fi world of Avatar, he has mastered the technique. Christopher Nolan achieved another groundbreaking feat with Interstellar producing an epic picture of space, it was undeniably incredible and breathtaking. However, when it comes to creating a character flawlessly with VFX, Pirates of the Caribbean’s Dead Man’s Chest outshined all.
Gore Verbinski-directed 2006 movie of the Johnny Depp starrer franchise, Dead Man’s Chest, produced a wonderful CGI villain— Davy Jones. Played by Bill Nighy, the character is an embodiment of perfection. At least, in the VFX department. In this regard, the masterful work in the film surpassed every DC and MCU character designed with VFZ, including Thanos.

John Knoll reflects on Davy Jones
Creating Davy Jones was immensely difficult for the VFX team, but it was masterful when it came out on screen, making it alive convincingly. Visual effects supervisors John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson, and Allen Hall won the Oscar at the 79th Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects in a film. Reflecting on the CGI movie villain, Davy Jones, Knoll spoke to Movie Web to discuss the character and the movie.
“I’m not gonna narrow it down to one particular shot but I am very pleased in how Davy Jones turned out. That was a very important character to gore at the beginning of the picture. He’s a major character, delivers a lot of dialogue, his performance is extremely important. We’re gonna see him in close-up, in daytime, nighttime, in the rain… in all kinds of conditions and he’s just gotta be fantastic. So we poured a lot of effort into it and I’m very pleased with how that turned out.”
Knoll went on to acknowledge the crew of Dead Man’s Chest, “I really enjoyed the onset work with the crew,” but he didn’t forget to thank Nighy as he “was fantastic and he took a really great leap of faith that we weren’t going to make him look silly.” Knoll worked on the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films as a visual effects supervisor under Industrial Light & Magic.
