Deniz Camp

Camp’s Vision and Versatility Make Him Ideal for Pushing the Boundaries of Multiverse Storytelling

In 2024, Marvel launched its first wave of Ultimate comics. While titles like Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, and Ultimate X-Men stood predominantly on their own during the first year, The Ultimates became the team-up book for Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, playing a key role in introducing broader world-building. With art by Jiam Frigeri, colors by Federico Blee, and letters by Travis Lanham, The Ultimates helps chart the course of this universe, with the writer behind it being none other than Camp. Meanwhile, on the DC front, it’s no surprise that Camp has been folded into its own alternate universe.

This is poised to be one of the biggest multi-reality comics of 2025. Camp is not only willing to push boundaries for Marvel and DC’s heroes but also eager to explore the impossible within and outside the genre, making him the perfect choice for a Marvel/DC crossover.

Mark Waid

A Proven Veteran Across DC and Marvel, Waid Knows Superhero Mythology Inside and Out

While DC’s Absolute Universe unfolds, the main continuity is thriving. With the All-In initiative, DC has seen the highly anticipated return of the Justice League with Justice League Unlimited by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamara Bonvillain, Arian Maher, and Travis Moore. Waid is a natural choice to bring the Justice League back, and he’s also an excellent pick for the upcoming Marvel/DC crossover. Waid is a superhero expert, delivering one of the most exciting Batman and Superman team-ups in years with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. He’s also the writer behind one of the best Superman comics in history, Superman: Birthright.

There’s no doubt Waid knows his DC, having also written for The Flash and Shazam. But he’s equally well-versed in Marvel, with many of his titles still beloved today. Waid has written for Marvel heroes like The Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Widow. If the Marvel and DC crossover event wants an expert in modern superhero mythology, they need look no further than Waid. This writer is ultimately a mastermind when it comes to making interconnected stories across separate titles, adding to his crossover credentials.

Johnathan Hickman

The Visionary Writer Perfect for a Marvel/DC Crossover Event

Perhaps one of the most prolific writers in superhero comics today is Jonathan Hickman, one of Marvel’s most acclaimed creators. Two of his current Marvel runs—Ultimate Spider-Man (with Marco Checchetto, Cory Petit, David Messina, and Matt Wilson) and Aliens vs. Avengers (with Esad Ribić, Petit, and Ive Svorcina)—both sold out of their first printings at comic shops and continue to be in high demand. Ultimate Spider-Man gave fans exactly what they had been craving from Peter Parker, while Aliens vs. Avengers is just one example of Hickman’s mastery in team-up comics.

Hickman has also made his mark on Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and X-Men, with his X-Men run being particularly revolutionary for Marvel. Working with Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, and Clayton Cowles, Hickman ushered in the Krakoan age, which became a gateway for new readers and a favorite among longtime fans. He is also the writer behind the groundbreaking Secret Wars (2015), which reshaped the Marvel Universe. While Hickman has redefined Marvel, DC is a different challenge—but he’s more than qualified to handle a large-scale crossover event between the two publishers.

Kelly Thompson

From Birds of Prey to Captain Marvel: Thompson’s Proven Ability to Handle Iconic Superhero Ensembles

Another writer involved in DC’s Absolute Universe is Kelly Thompson. Along with Hayden Sherman, Dustin Nguyen, Mattia De Iulis, Becca Varey, and Jordie Bellaire, Thompson revitalizes an iconic DC character’s origin in Absolute Wonder Woman. This isn’t Thompson’s first DC project, though. She also wrote the well-regarded Birds of Prey comic alongside Leonardo Romero, Clayton Cowles, Arist Deyn, and Jordie Bellaire. In this series, Thompson showcased her ability to handle a variety of DC characters, including Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Batgirl, Big Barda, and more.

Thompson’s talent for writing ensemble casts extends beyond DC. At Marvel, she wrote Captain Marvel for an impressive 50 issues, with one of the series’ standout strengths being its dynamic supporting cast. Thompson is an expert at crafting compelling ensembles, as demonstrated in West Coast Avengers and other Marvel titles. Time and again, she has proven that she can deliver long-form superhero stories full of heart and depth. With her experience and expertise, Thompson would be an invaluable addition to the upcoming Marvel/DC crossover event.

3

Al Ewing

Ewing’s Bold Storytelling and Past Successes Should Make Him a Key Player in the Upcoming Marvel/DC Crossover

With the second wave of DC’s Absolute comics, fans eagerly await the arrival of Absolute Green Lantern by Al Ewing and Jahony Lindsay, which appears to be set to give Far Sector’s Jo the spotlight at DC again. Expectations are high for this comic, with some fans hoping that it will lean into the cosmic horror side of things, especially when one looks at Ewing’s past work. In particular, Ewing wrote one of the best Incredible Hulk comics back in 2018.

DC just delivered a subtle nod to Marvel’s Hulk, with Beast Boy paying tribute to one of the Green Goliath’s most iconic cinematic moments.

This Incredible Hulk run, by Ewing, Joe Bennet, Ruy José, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit, embraces the horror of Bruce Banner’s alter ego, particularly focusing on the body horror of the character. It pushes boundaries, a trademark of Ewing’s writing. His previous works, such as Defenders and Loki: Agent of Asgard, also pushed boundaries, but in those, Ewing explored the medium and history of comics, serving as love letters to storytelling itself. Having a writer like Ewing helm one of the biggest crossover events in recent memory makes perfect sense.

2

Daniel Warren Johnson

DWJ Combines Cosmic Fun and Emotional Depth

Daniel Warren Johnson is a force to be reckoned with in comics. Frequently collaborating with colorist Mike Spicer, they embrace the wild, impossible, and fun aspects of comics through titles like Extremity, Murder Falcon, and Do a Powerbomb! More recently, they’re behind one of the best Image Comics of 2024, The Moon Is Following Us. For a crossover event of this magnitude, having a writer and artist like Daniel Warren Johnson on board would undoubtedly bring the fun and excitement.

Johnson is no stranger to Marvel or DC. His Beta Ray Bill comic, written by Johnson, with Spicer and Joe Sabino, perfectly captures the cosmic fun of the Marvel Universe while maintaining a deeply relatable story. He also wrote and illustrated Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, which placed Diana in a post-apocalyptic world reminiscent of Mad Max. Johnson’s ability to handle major IP, seen in his Transformers run, allows him to deliver a unique, emotionally resonant comic that fans will cherish.

1

Jason Aaron

Aaron’s Expertise in Crafting Large-Scale Comic Events

Jason Aaron is yet another prominent writer in the Absolute comics line. Specifically, he is behind Absolute Superman, which, alongside Rafa Sandival, Ulises Arreola, Carmine Di Giandomenico, and Becca Carey, reimagines Kal-El in a stunning way. While this version of Superman moves away from his typical origin story, he remains true to the heart of the character. Though part of the acclaimed Absolute line-up, Aaron is most renowned for his work with Marvel, having tackled iconic characters like Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Hulk, and multiple versions of Thor.
