Warning! Spoilers ahead for Godzilla vs. Hulk #1!Nothing says comic book fun more than Marvel’s latest crossover that sees Godzilla gain the powers of the Hulk. The publisher has brought the King of the Monsters to face off against the Jade Giant, and the result is one of the most amazing stories this year.

Godzilla has a past with the Marvel Universe, but a new series of crossovers has brought the iconic movie titan back in a series of one-shots pairing him up with iconic heroes. After meeting the Fantastic Four, Godzilla goes up against the Incredible Hulk, and the result is a wild fusion that could only happen in a no-holds-barred crossover.

Godzilla Just Gained The Incredible Hulk’s Gamma Power

The King of the Monsters is Now the King of the Hulks

In Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 by Gerry Dugan, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Daniele Orlandini, Federico Blee, and Ariana Maher, General Ross is leading a mission to capture and destroy Godzilla. To see his goals through, he has Dr. Demonicus take control of the spider kaiju Kumonga and uses its webbing to attack Mothra and lure Godzilla into a trap. The plan works and Godzilla comes to Mothra’s aid. Ross and Bruce Banner launch the next phase of their plan and board two rebuilt Mechagodzillas to attack Godzilla.

However, the two Mechagodzillas and Kumonga aren’t enough to take down Godzilla, who effortlessly turns the tables against all three. With no other option, Demonicus releases his secret weapon: A toxic kaiju spliced with the DNA of several defeated large-scale monsters, Hedorah. Hedorah breaks from its containment unit and heads to the battlefield where it starts doing serious damage to Godzilla. However, the fight triggers Banner’s anger issues, transforming him into the Hulk and allowing him to break free and join the battle as well.

…Hulk doesn’t just shock Godzilla back to life, the brute also gives the kaiju some of Hulk’s gamma-enhanced blood.

Hulk tries to take on Hedorah himself, but quickly realizes that the monster is too toxic to touch. Hulk decides Godzilla is the only way to stop Hedorah, and the hero quickly grabs a power line to try and revive the giant lizard. But Hulk doesn’t just shock Godzilla back to life, the brute also gives the kaiju some of Hulk’s gamma-enhanced blood. The blood makes Godzilla stronger and more powerful than ever, allowing him to easily blast Hedorah away with a mighty blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath.

A Godzilla Hulk is Exactly What These Crossovers Were Made to Create

Marvel Letting Creators Run Wild is What Fans Want to See

This issue had a lot of fun stuff going for it. Monster battles, two Mechagodzillas, and a lot of really clever gags and dialogue. But what takes the cake more than anything is Godzilla’s radical transformation thanks to his blood transfusion with the Hulk. It would have been easy just to have Godzilla and Hulk meet and duke it out with each other and another evil monster. But the creative team went all-out with this story and gave fans something that was so obvious, yet so creative: A gamma-enhanced Godzilla.

Everyone likes it when publishers and franchises come together as it can lead to some pretty great moments. But not every crossover pushes the boundaries or tries to experiment, which isn’t bad, necessarily. However, the fun in bringing two unlikely properties together is doing things that readers just aren’t seeing anywhere else. Sure, Godzilla fans aren’t exactly starved for content, and neither are Hulk fans for that matter. But where else are they going to see Godzilla get a power bump courtesy of the Incredible Hulk?

Marvel Comics clearly trusted the creative team with this one-shot…

Marvel Comics clearly trusted the creative team with this one-shot and the result is one of the most wild stories its put out all year. That kind of creative freedom is exactly the thing that fans want to see in comic books, especially if it leads to a moment as awesome as Godzilla Hulk’s final showdown with Hedorah. Granted, not every single story is going to knock it out of the park. But when Marvel Comics allows its creatives to swing for the fences, the payoff is absolutely worth it.

Godzilla vs. Hulk Shows Just How Creative Marvel Can Be

Who Knows What’s Next for the Marvel Universe?

Seeing Godzilla gaining Hulk-like strength was unbelievably exciting. And the best part is there’s still four more one-shots in this collaboration, pairing the King of the Monsters up with heroes like Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Thor. If those books are half as creative, or they take as big a swing as this one-shot did, Marvel fans might just see something even more impressive than Godzilla’s Hulk-like transformation.
