Avengers: Doomsday gets its own heartbreaking version of Thanos’ snap through Loki’s death and a major multiverse event in a new harrowing Marvel Cinematic Universe theory. Few movies in the history of cinema, not just the MCU, have managed to end with such a shocking and bleak ending as that of Avengers: Infinity War. The project stands as one of the MCU’s best movies, alternating with Endgame as the fan-favorite Avengers film for a huge portion of the MCU’s fanbase. Avengers: Infinity War ended with half the universe snapped away and Thanos basking in the glow of his victory.

Thanos is unlikely to be back in Avengers: Doomsday, unless Marvel is keeping a cameo as a surprise for the film. Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast will instead focus on a new main villain, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom taking over as the Multiverse Saga’s main threat. Doom is one of Marvel’s most powerful and intelligent characters in the comics. His MCU debut is sure to shake things up for the franchise in a major way, and it could all lead to Loki’s death in a dark Avengers: Doomsday theory that gives the film its own Infinity War-level ending.

Incursions Are Going To Be Crucial To Avengers: Doomsday

The Next Two Avengers Movies Are Connected

Incursions were introduced during the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. They come from the Secret Wars event in Marvel Comics. An Incursion is an event that is caused when two or more universes collide. It leads to the destruction of one or more of them. Like in the comics, the MCU has shown the destructive force of such events, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange seeing how Sinister Strange’s universe was slowly being destroyed by an incursion caused by his actions. Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, should feature incursions as key elements.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch Just Had A Surprise 2025 Return And I Know Exactly How It Could Lead To Avengers: Doomsday

Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch makes her return in 2025, and the MCU has the perfect way for Wanda Maximoff to appear in Avengers: Doomsday.

The next two Avengers movies will showcase Doctor Doom’s story, with the villain being the main player of the films. Marvel Studios has already introduced multiple universes that could collide with Earth-616. The Illuminati’s world, Earth-838, the universe where the X-Men seen in The Marvels‘ post-credits scene come from, and Deadpool & Wolverine‘s universe are a few of them. Like the comics, the MCU’s heroes will likely race against time to defend their universe in Avengers: Doomsday, leading to confrontation with other universes and their heroes, who also want to save their realities from being destroyed.

The Multiverse Saga Had To Go Through A Major Overhaul

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, not Iron Man, is an incredibly exciting and intriguing factor in Avengers: Doomsday. The villain has not yet made his debut in the franchise, which is scheduled to happen in the upcoming Avengers film. Doom’s situation is complicated, as the main villain of the next two Avengers movies will have to debut with little to no setup, which comes in stark contrast with how the Infinity Saga handled things. Thanos’ goal with the Infinity Stones was built up over multiple movies, with the villain appearing a few times.

Marvel could not do the same for RDJ’s Doctor Doom, as the original plan for the Multiverse Saga was to have Kang the Conqueror as its central villain. However, Kang actor Jonathan Majors was fired by Marvel after he was convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Since Majors played not only Kang, but all of his multiverse variants, Marvel decided to drop its plans for the Council of Kangs and pivot to Doom. As such, Victor von Doom does not currently have a clear plan set for his MCU appearances like Thanos had with the Infinity Stones.

Avengers Doomsday Theory: Loki Takes The Place Of The Infinity Stones

Doctor Doom And The Avengers Go After The Former God Of Mischief

While Doctor Doom does not have his version of Thanos’ Infinity Stones set up by now, that does not mean Marvel could not give him that as soon as he debuts. An Avengers: Doomsday theory claims that Loki could take the place the Infinity Stones had in the last two Avengers movies, with both Doom and the Avengers racing against time to find him for very different reasons. Tom Hiddleston’s former God of Mischief was last seen in the Loki season 2 finale. The Disney+ series ended with Loki becoming the new protector of the Multiverse, guarding Yggdrasil.

Loki is one of the MCU’s most powerful magic users, and he is now in control of the multiverse. As such, he is the character one would have to kill to become the new ruler of the multiverse. Well, that puts him on Doctor Doom’s path. In Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars, Doom takes the Beyonders’ powers to reshape the multiverse in his image, combining several characters and locations from all over the Marvel multiverse into Battleworld. There, Victor von Doom ruled as God Emperor Doom. With the start of the incursions, Doom could learn of Loki’s powers and status.

This sends Downey’s villain on a journey to kill Loki and take over his role. Doctor Strange and Clea were last seen going off to stop an incursion. Strange’s multiverse travels make him the hero with the most knowledge of what is going on, and in his journey, he can learn of Hiddleston’s new Loki variant and set off with the Avengers to find him and help him save the multiverse. Like Avengers: Infinity War was a race after the Infinity Stones, Avengers: Doomsday would be a race after Loki. Doom killing him in the end mirrors Infinity War‘s ending.

Why Loki’s Death Is Perfect For Avengers: Doomsday

The Heartbreaking Moment Would Be Fitting

Loki dying in Avengers: Doomsday would repeat his Avengers: Infinity War fate. In the 2018 movie, the original version of Hiddleston’s character was killed by Thanos at the start of the film, cementing the Mad Titan as a villain fans should hate and fear. Since Robert Downey Jr., the MCU’s most beloved star, plays Doctor Doom, a nefarious act is needed to make sure Doom is seen as the villain he really is. Killing Hiddleston’s new version of Loki and taking his power over the multiverse would fall in line with that, leading to him creating Battleworld to rule.

A shocking Avengers: Doomsday theory pits the original Avengers against the MCU heroes, but none of them are evil versions of themselves.

Loki season 2’s ending truly felt like a finale for Hiddleston’s Marvel character. While a sad one, as Loki was destined to be alone for all time, it allowed him to watch over his friends and the multiverse, ensuring they would be safe. Loki has done everything he could in the MCU, so the character departing the franchise for good in Avengers: Doomsday would make sense. By dying, his departure could impact other characters, like Thor, who would be crushed, and the franchise as a whole, with Doom creating Battleworld. Avengers: Doomsday would end as tragically as Infinity War did.
