Director Matthew Vaughn has made his fair share of comic book and superhero movies with Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman, and in a recent interview with Screen Rant, he shared his thoughts on superhero fatigue and what he hopes to see from Marvel Studios and DC Studios as they continue to build their brands with the films and TV shows that they make. He said:
“I think at least DC is under; I think James Gunn and [Peter Safran] they’ve got a good chance of popping, and hopefully, [Kevin] Feige will go back to less is more and make less films and concentrate on making them great.”
Yep! Like a lot of fans, this is something that I’ve been saying for years! They need to put more focus on developing quality films instead of pumping out a ton of mediocre content, which is killing their fan base.
Vaughn also believes that the superhero movies being made today rely way too much on CGI saying that it has “f***ed up everything as well because you feel like you’re watching a video game.” He added: “You’re not with the characters. Apart from Guardians, I still think Groot and the raccoon are f***ing pieces of genius, that I feel so much for them. So I’ll be intrigued.”
I agree with the CGI madness, but that’s just the way things are right now and I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. The studios just need to start putting more time and effort into them so the CGI looks great instead of shotty.
Vaughn also talked about DC’s The Flash movie, which had a disappointing box office run. He said: “What really freaked me out was that I really enjoyed The Flash. I thought it was a really good film, right? And it died at the box office, right? And I’m like, Wait, hold on, this is a good movie. What happened? And I don’t know whether that was superhero fatigue; you’ve just seen it done. So even now that we’ve made it well, there was some really, really complicated, hard, and quite special, unique filmmaking in that film. Which I don’t think Muschietti got enough credit for what they pulled off.”
The Flash bombed because of a variety of factors which not only included superhero fatigue but also controversy surrounding its star, and the fact that the whole DC Cinematic Universe is going to be rebooted, and the story wasn’t really going anywhere with the franchise.
