It’s been around a year and three months since Marvel fired Jonathan Majors after his domestic violence conviction, but the acclaimed actor is already edging his way back into the Hollywood mainstream. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Majors said he’s been taking meetings on a superhero film project, though details were scarce. “No relation to the big guys, DC or Marvel, but a pretty wicked story.” He added, “I’m glad to be reading.”

At the same time, Majors said he has a bit more of a solid opportunity, attached to a revenge thriller called “Merciless.” The film is directed by Martin Villeneuve, brother of Denis of “Dune” fame.

Still, Majors doesn’t sound completely confident that he’ll succeed in jumpstarting his acting career: “Sometimes it feels like it’s not going to happen. And sometimes it feels like we start next week.”
Majors also talked to THR about the very moment he found out his future as Kang the Conqueror was over. He was in a car with his legal team having just learned of his conviction. One member of the team turned to him: “He goes, ‘I’m just gonna tell you now. That way you’re not surprised, and you can start processing it. They fired you. Marvel fired you.'”
The original plan was for Majors’s portrayal of the time-traveling warlord Kang the Conqueror to replace Josh Brolin’s Thanos as the next Big Bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his first appearance as the character in the Season 1 finale of “Loki,” reprised the role in 2023’s “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania,” returned for Season 2 of Loki, and was expected to make many more appearances including in what would have been the fifth “Avengers” movie, “Avengers: Kang Dynasty.”
All of that was put in danger in March 2023 when Majors was arrested on assault, strangulation, and harassment charges against his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. In December Majors was found guilty of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment. Following the conviction, Majors was fired from Marvel and the studio took Kang out of their future plans, ultimately replacing him with Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming portrayal of Doctor Doom.
One of the bigger body blows Majors’s career took even before the conviction was Disney‘s removal of his drama “Magazine Dreams” from their release schedule. The film will finally get a wider release on March 21.
