Jeremy Allen White isn’t a fan of superhero movies and he opened up about a meeting for a Marvel-like film that went wrong.

White spoke to GQ about a meeting with studio executives for an apparent superhero film and how he took the wrong approach, stating, “I had a meeting for a kind of Marvel-y movie, and I had an attitude. I think I played it all wrong.” White was skeptical and he recreated the meeting during the interview. “ ‘Tell me about why should I do your movie,’” White said while crossing his arms and leaning back. “They were like, ‘F*** you,’” White added, continuing: “And I was like, ‘Right on.’” It is unclear whether he was talking about an MCU movie specifically, though calling the film “Marvel-y” might suggest it’s not an actual Marvel film.

Jeremy Allen White Would Have Been a Great Fit for This Iconic Role

White previously expressed his skepticism regarding superhero films, revealing that he felt bewildered about how such a role become a pinnacle of an actor’s career, expressing his preference for a $25 million drama. However, his perspective recently mellowed and he now diplomatically acknowledges that Marvel flicks are made with highly accomplished filmmakers and secure the participation of talented actors for these films. White remains uncertain whether he should be burning bridges at this juncture in his career, but he holds no regrets about how the meeting played out.

“I am confused at how the pinnacle of an actor’s career has ended up in that place,” White is quoted as saying last year. Now, he had to say of superhero films, “They get really good filmmakers to do those movies and obviously they get really good actors to do those movies… [But] I played it the way I wanted to play it [and have no regrets].”

The True Story Behind the Von Erich Family in A24’s The Iron Claw

White joins the likes of Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott who has criticized superhero movies. Scorsese has been vocal about his sentiments regarding comic book films, particularly those within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has openly expressed his disapproval of the MCU, likening Marvel movies to theme park attractions and raising doubts about their depth and substance. The House of Gucci director called the superhero model “boring.” In addition, Quentin Tarantino attributed the decline of traditional movie stars to the Marvel franchise, contending that characters like Thor and Captain America have become the primary stars in the industry, overshadowing the actors who portray them. He coined the term “Marvel-ization” to describe this phenomenon of artificial stardom in Hollywood.

White has gained recognition for his portrayal of Lip Gallagher in the Showtime series Shameless and as the culinary maestro Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in the Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear, which has recently been confirmed for a third season. His performance in The Bear garnered him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, in addition to clinching prestigious accolades such as a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics’ Choice Television Award.
