The following contains major spoilers for Phoenix #7, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel has a new Phoenix Force, and she is absolutely terrifying.

Phoenix #7 opens to the titular cosmic hero and her tight-knit band of allies preparing to tackle the latest threat that the Mad Titan Thanos has come to pose to the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately for them, Thanos’ usual powers have been supercharged by the fabled artifact known as the Warlock’s Eye. When Thanos’ newfound strength proves to be too much for Jean Grey, she calls out to the last person she can form a psychic connection with in the hopes that they will be the heroes’ salvation, although Adani might just be their downfall, instead.

First glimpsed in the pages of 1976’s X-Men #101 by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, the ancient cosmic raptor known as the Phoenix Force is one of the most powerful entities in the entire Marvel Universe. A burning being who holds sway over destruction and rebirth, the Phoenix is feared even by the likes of Galactus. Throughout the Phoenix’s eons-old history, it has chosen a variety of mortal hosts over the years, yet the most iconic of them all by a wide margin is undoubtedly the X-Men’s very own Jean Grey.

Despite the dark, destructive chapters of Jean and the Phoenix Force’s individual and shared histories alike, the two have come to form a genuinely symbiotic relationship in more recent years. As the Phoenix, Jean was instrumental in winning the battle against the Dominion level entity known as Enigma, formerly Mister Sinister, not to mention a long list of other major battles along the way. Since the fall of Krakoa, Jean has once again taken to the stars, whereas the vast majority of mutantkind have stayed behind on Earth to make new homes for themselves wherever they can.

Peter Parker is nowhere to be seen, and the next generation of Ultimate Spider-Man has already picked up the mantle in his place.

Introduced in the pages of 2024’s Phoenix #1 by Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo, the alien warrior Adani was raised within the Universal Church of Truth and preached its teachings on her home world. When the Dark God Perrikus came and slaughtered her father just prior to the Phoenix’s own visit to her world, Adani misinterpreted the latter’s presence as being ultimately responsible. Since then, Adani has embarked upon a brutal crusade in the pursuit of vengeance against the Phoenix, one which has seen her align herself with the true villains at the heart of her own story.
