Summary

James Gunn cannot write another MCU movie as he is now one of DC Studios’ co-CEOs. Gunn’s plate is full with upcoming DCU projects, including Superman: Legacy, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker season 2. Gunn is actively involved in writing and directing these DCU projects, making it impossible for him to take on an MCU movie even if he could.

James Gunn reveals if he could write another Marvel Cinematic Universe movie now that he is in charge of the new DC Universe. Gunn first joined the MCU, developing the acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel Studios. Now, the director has become the creative chief of the new DCU. Despite Gunn being responsible for DC’s upcoming movies and series, fans have been asking the director to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 or a possible Star-Lord solo project, and he has now addressed that possibility.

On Threads, Gunn said that he could not “could not either physically or legally” write another MCU movie now that he is one of DC Studios’ co-CEOs.

While the legal part of Gunn’s answer makes sense, as one of DC Studios bosses actively helping Marvel Studios would not be possible, the physical part caught fans’ attention. Gunn then explained, saying he “couldn’t possibly fit in any other projects” and that his “plate is pleasantly full.” In March, Gunn begins filming the DCU’s Superman: Legacy.

The DCU’s Creative Chief Is Actively Involved With Multiple Projects

While Gunn is in charge of leading a group of talented writers that is crafting the overall story of the DCU, he is also directly involved with a few announced projects. Gunn is the writer and director of the DCU’s first movie — 2025’s Superman: Legacy. The reboot of the Man of Steel is set to go into production in March, with most of its roles already cast. David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane lead Superman: Legacy‘s cast.

Gunn will not only handle the DCU’s first movie, but also its first series and overall project — Creature Commandos. Gunn has revealed that the adult animated series’ first season will consist of seven episodes, which were written by him. Gunn was also responsible for directing Creature Commandos‘ main cast, which includes names like Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, and more.

Creature Commandos releases in late 2024 and will bring back multiple DCEU actors as their characters, including Steve Agee as John Economos, Sean Gunn as Weasel, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Gunn’s third confirmed DCU project is Peacemaker season 2. While the first season of the John Cena-led series was set in the DCEU, even featuring a cameo from the Justice League, the new season of the series will move to the new DCU. Gunn has been constantly updating fans on his progress on Peacemaker season 2’s scripts, with the director’s latest update revealing that he was already penning the season finale. Based on how busy James Gunn is with the DCU, it makes sense that he would not have time to write an MCU movie even if he could.
