The first issue of Marvel Comics last team-up title starring Deadpool and Wolverine ended with a shocking reveal, as legendary X-franchise villain Stryfe, the villainous duplicate of hero Cable, made his return. Marvel doubled down on the twist, as it seems the Merc With a Mouth is working for the antagonist, seeking to bring about “the time of the X-Cutioner.”

In a preview first shared by AIPT for Deadpool/Wolverine #2 – written by Benjamin Percy, with art by Joshua Cassara –doesn’t reveal much more about the twist, so fans will have to pick up the issue when it is released next month to find out how Deadpool has fallen under Stryfe’s sway, and what exactly their plans for Wolverine and Marvel’s mutants are.

Stryfe is among the most impactful villains in X-Men history, and author Ben Percy does not choose his villains lightly – meaning readers can be assured that something big is in store as the rest of the series unfolds.

Stryfe’s return served as the big final-page reveal at the end of Deadpool/Wolverine #1, and the wordless preview for the second issue doesn’t give away more about the villain’s comeback, except to reiterate that Wade Wilson is doing his bidding. The first issue made it clear that Deadpool was being manipulated, and the fact that it is Stryfe complicates things dramatically – in the best possible way for readers, and the worst possible way for the heroes of the Marvel Universe.

Longtime Marvel fans’ interest should be particularly piqued by the “X-Cutioner” reference made by Deadpool while kneeling before Stryfe. X-Cutioner’s Song is one of the most iconic X-franchise sagas of the 1990s, a twelve-part epic that ran through all Marvel’s major X-Men books at the time, in which Stryfe was the central antagonist. In addition to being an action-packed, memorable story arc, X-Cutioner’s Song had long-term plot implications that still reverberate in franchise lore to this day – and now Marvel could be readying fans for a reprise.

While Deadpool and Wolverine are Marvel’s most popular pairing these days – in the comics, as well as on screen with the success of their eponymous film – longtime fans of the publisher know that Wade Wilson’s most timeless partnership is with Cable, whom Stryfe is the dark opposite of. Deadpool/Wolverine has the opportunity to offer an ominious alternate version of this iconic duo, by teaming Deadpool with Stryfe. What should make this truly exciting for Marvel fans, above all else, is that it is extremely difficult to predict where the series will go next.

With mutantkind more divided than it has been in years, this is a particularly dangerous time for Stryfe to re-emerge.

While it seems safe to say Stryfe’s latest attempt to eradicate mutantkind will be thwarted, the repercussions from this story arc – for Wolverine, Deadpool, Stryfe himself, and all Marvel’s mutants – remain to be revealed as the miniseries plays out. With mutantkind more divided than it has been in years, this is a particularly dangerous time for Stryfe to re-emerge, and author Benjamin Percy can be trusted to tell a story with the highest possible dramatic stakes, as Wolverine and Deadpool’s latest story takes a dark turn.

Deadpool/Wolverine #2 will be available February 12, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
