Marvel writer Jonathan Hickman dropped a major bombshell during a podcast appearance last week, revealing that the publisher currently holds the rights to produce X-Files comics, and even cross them over with the Marvel Universe, as Hickman has done with the Alien franchise in his thrilling new series Aliens vs. Avengers.
Speaking with the Off Panel podcast, Hickman explained that a deal between Fox and Marvel has allowed for characters from Iconic Fox-owned properties to make their way into the Marvel Comics landscape.
Fans have already seen this with the Predator franchise, as the Yautja has been integrated in Marvel lore, and with Aliens vs. Avengers; according to Jonathan Hickman, readers can expect to have Scully and Mulder crossing over into the Marvel Universe at some point in the near future as well.
An X-Files Crossover With The Marvel Universe Could Happen Soon…Yes, Seriously
Marvel’s Partnership With Fox Makes It Possible
Jonathan Hickman’s mention of potential new X-Files comics produced by Marvel Comics caught fans’ attention in its own right. While Sinners director Ryan Coogler has stated his intentions to work on an X-Files reboot for television, the best case scenario for another revival for Mulder and Scully, at least in their original incarnations, would be in comic book form. X-Files has been adapted into comics before, but there is still limitless potential for the franchise in the medium, and it seems the next generation of X-Files stories may very well come from Marvel.
What exactly an X-Files/X-Men crossover, or Mulder and Scully meeting the Fantastic Four, might look like will remain wide open to fan speculation for the time being, but the likelihood of it happening in the next several years just went up.
Adding even more intrigue to this possibility, though, is the idea that the X-Files franchise could follow in the footsteps of several Fox properties, most prominently Predator and Alien, that have been folded into the Marvel Universe over the last year. What exactly an X-Files/X-Men crossover, or Mulder and Scully meeting the Fantastic Four, might look like will remain wide open to fan speculation for the time being, but the likelihood of it happening in the next several years just went up.
Marvel’s Collaboration With Fox Puts An “Alien Vs. Predator Vs. X-Files” Crossover On The Table
The Iconic Franchises Could All Overlap Under Marvel’s Banner
Beyond the novel idea of the X-Files beloved characters finding themselves in the Marvel Universe, it is worth noting that this also raises the possibility of these different Fox franchises interacting in the comics. The Predator franchise’s Yautja has already made its presence felt in battles against Wolverine, Black Panther, and currently, Spider-Man; whether in the Marvel Universe, or their own self-contained series, it would be thrilling to find out how Scully and Mulder would fare against the infamous extraterrestrial hunters. Naturally, the same goes for the Alien franchise’s Xenomorph.

Marvel’s mightiest heroes are about to face their deadliest challenge yet as vibranium-enhanced predators turn Earth into a hunting ground.
In fact, Mulder and Scully could be the human intermediaries in the next great Alien vs. Predator comic crossover. The door is open to such a thing, so long as Marvel continues to partner with Fox, granting them the rights to use these legendary characters. As Jonathan Hickman explained during his Off Panel appearance, this agreement has been in place for several years already, and it is just finally starting to manifest in the comics. An X-Files comic at Marvel isn’t guaranteed, but the hope is very much alive for fans of the franchise.
