It’s Official, Marvel’s New Hawkeye Is Set to Make a Big Comeback With a Major Villain’s Help

Marvel has just announced an Ultimate Hawkeye on-shot coming this fall, which will send her on “a mission that will have a massive impact on the future of the Ultimate Universe,” as she seeks to take down the Maker, the overarching villain of this remixed version of classic Marvel Comics lore, all by herself.

As reported by AIPT, Ultimate Hawkeye #1 will feature a frame story written by Deniz Camp, with art by Juan Frigeri, with additional authors and artists for the main plot to be revealed later. As teased by Marvel, the issue finds the fledgling version of the hero undertaking her most consequential adventure yet, as she is thrust into the very center of the Ultimate Universe storyline.

Currently, the Ultimate Universe is operating on a “ticking clock,” counting down toward a confrontation with the Maker and his villainous forces, and how Hawkeye’s mission plays into that timeline remains to be determined.

Marvel’s synopsis for Ultimate Hawkeye #1 promises more backstory for the character, as well as more pivotal role in the Ultimate Universe, at least for the course of this issue. As previewed by the publisher:

Before being recruited to the Ultimates by Captain America, Charli was a vigilante, defending their people from Roxxon’s exploitation. Now, in an adventure that reveals more of Ultimate Hawkeye’s history, the expert archer breaks away from the team to embark on a covert operation to take out the Maker singlehandedly, a mission that will have a massive impact on the future of the Ultimate Universe.

In the context of Marvel’s Ultimate lore, the Maker is currently locked away in a prison of his own making, but there are just a few months before his return, meaning each issue of Marvel’s line of Ultimate comics brings its heroes and villains one step closer to a climactic confrontation. Now, it appears Hawkeye will try to prevent that from coming to pass.

This far ahead of the issue’s release, there is still a lot of narrative ground to cover that will set the stage for Ultimate Hawkeye #1, but there is some advanced speculation that can be made, based on what fans know about the current trajectory of the Ultimate storyline. That is, it is fair to assume that Hawkeye will fail in her mission to assassinate the Maker, given the role he is expected to play in the endgame of the continuity’s overarching plot. The question then becomes, what does this mean for Hawkeye herself?

Could Marvel’s New “Breakout” Hero Be In Serious Danger?

First off, readers must at least entertain the possibility that Hawkeye will actually succeed, and kill the Maker, radically altering the paradigm of the Ultimate Universe moving forward. However, that is unlikely; chances are much higher that she will fail, but what that failure will look like is a major point of uncertainty. It is possible that Hawkeye, despite being described as a “breakout” character from the continuity’s flagship Ultimates series, could meet her tragic demise in this one-shot. Certainly, few twists would be more gutwrenching, if that were the case.

Alternatively, Hawkeye might survive her mission, but fail in a way that has unintended consequences for her and her fellow heroes; perhaps she could inadvertently speed up the Maker’s return, or somehow make him even more dangerous, if that is possible. Readers will learn more about Ultimate Hawkeye #1, including the authors of the issue’s main story, soon enough, which will allow for further informed speculation, but for now, devoted fans can only hope for the best for the exciting new version of classic Marvel hero Hawkeye.
