It seems one unique Spider-Man run is coming to an end. This past summer, Marvel’s highly controversial main canon run of The Amazing Spider-Man helmed by Zeb Wells came to a close with mixed reactions as critics celebrated the end. With Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland’s ten-part 8 Deaths of Spider-Man run on the horizon, it seems a very underrated Spider-Man run elsewhere is preparing its own swan song.

As shared on X by user MangaMoguraRE, Spider-Man: Octopus Girl by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court will premiere its final chapter on January 7, 2025 on Manga Plus. The official Marvel story comes from the creators of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes who insert the same kind of natural comedic tone and fast-paced action that made the manga a must-see for anime fans.

Some fans may scratch their heads as to whether this manga fits in with Marvel, but Spider-Man: Octopus Girl proves how adapting a comic book staple into Japanese storytelling makes for a perfect marriage.

Spider-Man: Octopus Girl Manga Returns for One Last Chapter

The Final Chapter Will Arrive on January 7, 2025

For those curious, this manga centers around Spider-Man’s greatest villain, Doc Ock (AKA: Doctor Octopus). In the first chapter of this series, the villain has another run-of-the-mill battle with Spide, only to fall to his apparent death once three of his octopus arms disconnect from him in the heat of the fight. Anna Marie 2.0, Otto’s A.I. assistant built with technology from the year 2099, can save him by putting Otto’s body into a coma and his mind into a spare clone body. When he awakens, the villain is not in his own body. Rather than Dr. Otto Octavius, we meet Otoha Okutamiya, a 14-year-old middle schooler.

The original Otoha finds herself trapped in Otto’s fourth octopus arm while Otto is in the young girl’s body with both his original memories and hers going to war. The first chapter was released at the top of summer 2023, and a year-and-a-half later, the finale approaches. Spider-Man: Octopus-Girl is practically a whimsical version of Marvel’s famed Superior Spider-Man arc albeit with beloved tropes of Japanese storytelling. This manga focuses on reincarnation like many popular modern anime and manga stories do. Series like Oshi No Ko have made the trope popular, and ironically, the idol drama also just ended recently.

Our Take on Spider-Man: Octopus-Girl

Why You Should Be Excited About the Manga’s Final Issue

On paper, a Spider-Man story in a manga might seem surprising, but some of the character’s earliest roots come from manga. One of the first popular live-action Spider-Man adaptations did not belong to director Sam Raimi but rather a Japanese tokusatsu TV show from 1978. This time, while the character is at the height of its popularity worldwide, Octopus-Girl is preparing its eagerly anticipated final chapter. The title is a fun series that carries the classic sensibilities of Spider-Man while showcasing one of Marvel’s best villain, so this final chapter should make for a must-see sendoff.

Chapter 32 of Spider-Man: Octopus Girl will be available from Jump Comics on January 7, 2025.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is the name given to several individuals who have employed a spider-moniker throughout Marvel Comics. Typically gaining their powers through a bite from a radioactive spider, the different Spider-Man heroes employ super-strength, agility, and intellect while utilizing webbing to swing and tangle up their foes. The most notable of these Spider-Men is Peter Parker, who remains one of the most popular superheroes throughout the world.
