Since being retconned as a mutant/Inhuman hybrid, Kamala Khan‘s Ms. Marvel has undergone a lot of changes, but a journey through X-Men history may be about to evolve the character and her abilities yet again. As Kamala finds herself thrust into one of the X-Men’s most devastating event stories of all time, the mutant Ms. Marvel could be no more…

Marvel recently released details about the conclusion to the Giant-Size X-Men anniversary event that is sending Ms. Marvel to some of the X-Men franchise’s most iconic moments. With Giant-Size House of M #1 – written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, and drawn by Francesco Manna – Marvel brings Kamala to an event that ended tragically for the X-Men, Avengers, and the Scarlet Witch.

After time travel makes her part of the epic Second Genesis X-Men team, a key player in the Dark Phoenix Saga, and a survivor of the Age of Apocalypse, Giant-Size House of M will see Kamala front and center with Wolverine for a new version of House of M – as seen in epic cover art from Adam Kubert. However, in an event that ended with most of mutantkind losing their powers, what is Marvel promising when it asks, “how will the aftermath of this adventure change Kamala Khan forever?” The issue’s summary reads:

She’s flown with the All-Different X-Men on their first mission, withstood the Dark Phoenix and survived the Age of Apocalypse – and now Ms. Marvel is rewarded with a world where mutants reign supreme!

But beneath the gilded surface, this utopia is rotting with prejudice and oppression – and Kamala must find an unlikely ally in schoolteacher Kitty Pryde to help her learn to live in this brave new world. But if Kamala is here… so is Legion! What dangerous power will he unleash – and can Kamala recruit allies in time to stand against him? Or will she – and all of mutantkind – be newly decimated?

Is Ms. Marvel Switching to Her MCU Powers? It Would Make a Lot of Sense

Giant-Size House of M #1 – Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing; Drawn by Francesco Manna; Cover Drawn by Adam Kubert; Revelations Story by Saladin Ahmed and Martín Cóccolo

Since Ms. Marvel’s revisiting of various X-Men eras promises to “change Kamala Khan forever, the Scarlet Witch’s rewriting of reality could prove to have devastating consequences for the new mutant. The original House of M by Brian Michael Bendis and Olivier Coipel saw Wanda Maximoff create an all-new version of reality, where mutants reigned over humans and various heroes led vastly different lives. However, the storyline’s bombshell ending saw the reality warper utter the words “no more mutants,” which wiped out the X-Gene from many iconic mutants, and there’s reason to worry that Kamala’s mutant status could be eliminated.

Recently, Ms. Marvel discovered she is both mutant and Inhuman, with her Inhuman stretching powers suppressing her natural mutant ability. Fans don’t yet know what Ms. Marvel’s mutant power is, but fans have speculated that she will be able to create hard-light constructs, matching how her powers are portrayed in the MCU. In an event famous for stripping mutants of their powers, it would make sense for Marvel to remove Kamala’s Inhuman stretching and replace it with her mutant power – an act of synergy which would bring the comic and MCU versions closer together.

Ms. Marvel Is Closer to the X-Men Than Ever Before

Kamala’s Quest Through X-Men History Ends in Giant-Size X-Men #2, from Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Jed Mackay and Adam Kubert

After going through some of the X-Men’s most famous stories, House of M is Kamala’s last trip through the mutants’ past before she teams up with a group of modern X-Men. Giant-Size X-Men #2 is the final entry in Kamala’s Giant-Size adventures, and could establish a brand-new status quo for Ms. Marvel. As the team faces “Old Man Legion”, Marvel Comics could bring Kamala to the forefront of the main X-Men roster once and for all, having given her a new place in the team’s stories past. The issue’s summary reads:

It all comes down to this. The final confrontation between the mad Old Man Legion and the New Mutant, Ms. Marvel. At stake: Jersey City, New York and the White Hot Room itself.

Kamala Khan understands now what it truly means to be a mutant – but will that be enough to stand against the most powerful enemy she has ever faced? Will she truly stand alone? And how will the aftermath of this adventure change Kamala Khan forever? Adam Kubert returns to close out the event with his breathtaking art in this can’t miss issue that takes things back to present day!

For a relatively new character, Kamala’s Ms. Marvel has had her status quo shifted very often. From her beginnings as part of the Inhumans, to her different MCU origin story and powers, to her present-day status as a mutant, Ms. Marvel’s lore has undergone several major shifts. However, as Marvel brings Kamala Khan back to a storyline that saw many of the universe’s X-Men lose their mutant powers, it’s possible Ms. Marvel is about to undergo yet another game-changing transformation.

Giant-Size House of M #1 will be available July 16, 2025, from Marvel Comics, followed by Giant-Size X-Men #2 on July 30.
