IDW backtracks on gloomy outlook.

Marvel to release The ‘Nam omnibus.

Marvel has no plans for Miracleman: The Dark Age.

This is Comic Book Club News for February 5, 2025.

After an earnings call last week painted a dire picture of the future of IDW Publishing, the company is backtracking on the language used.

In the report, auditors noted that due to the general financial state of the company as well as debt from the Diamond Comic Distributors bankruptcy, “substantial doubt exists about the Company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”

However, on a call with CEO Davidi Jonas, as reported by The Beat, the follow-up has been a little rosier. Said Jonas: “IDW management does not feel that IDW is a substantial risk as a going concern. We expect in the coming days that we will be restating our financials, removing that language, and we have worked with our auditors and provided additional information and additional clarity, so that they share our opinion.”

As previously noted on this podcast, there are a lot of questions around the Diamond bankruptcy, and IDW — while still in debt — is good at raising capital, and recently announced a movie and other projects in development. So whether the auditors were initially correct or not, the company is taking strides to fix the problem. More on this as it develops.

A mostly forgotten piece of Marvel history is getting an omnibus, as the classic The ‘Nam is being collected into one, massive volume.

Per ICv2, The book was originally written by a Vietnam veteran, Doug Murray, and edited by Larry Hama, who is best known now for his continuing work on G.I. Joe. Unlike other Marvel comics of the time, The ‘Nam took a real-time structure, set in Vietnam, and perhaps presaging the current Ultimate Universe every issue would jump one month in the future, despite taking place 20 years in the past.

The hardcover collection will collect the first 45 issues, as well as two issues of Savage Tales, including the material by Murray that more accurately captured the era. After that point, Murray left the title, writer Chuck Dixon took over, The Punisher joined the cast, and the title ditched the real-time format. Those subsequent 39 issues of the title will not be in the new omnibus.

The 1,120 page hardcover will hit stores on March 17.

Marvel has no plans at the current time for Miracleman: The Dark Age, the concluding volume to the Miracleman saga. Which tracks, because the book was to be written by Neil Gaiman.

Previously, Marvel told Comic Book Club that they have no current or future plans to work with Gaiman, after a recent article accused the writer of multiple counts of sexual assault and harassment. And in editor Tom Brevoort’s most recent newsletter, he obliquely backed up this assertion.

In response to a seemingly blissfully unaware question about whether the script for Miracleman: The Dark Age has been delivered, and if artist Mark Buckingham was working on it, Brevoort said, “At the moment… nothing is going on with THE DARK AGE. If something changes in that regard, I’m sure you’ll hear about it.”

Thus continues the tale of one of the most cursed projects in comics, Miracleman, a book that has been shelved and kicked down the road for decades at this point. The Dark Age was meant to be the concluding part of the epic, but given the allegations against Gaiman — and a recent lawsuit accusing Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer of human trafficking — it seems likely the story of Miracleman ended with the recently concluded Silver Age series.
