I think a second season of The Defenders in the MCU would be the perfect way to bring back some of Marvel Studios’ newest heroes, many of whom seem to have already been forgotten. Originally, Marvel Television developed The Defenders as a miniseries, bringing together the street-level heroes of Netflix’s Defenders Saga against a common foe, Elektra Natchios and the Hand. A second season was never planned, but I think reviving The Defenders would be a fantastic choice for the MCU, especially given the slew of new street-level heroes.

Marvel Studios has recently been on a revival kick, continuing X-Men: The Animated Series in 2024’s X-Men ’97, and developing Phase 5’s Daredevil: Born Again as a continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil series. This has made me very happy, and I would hate for Marvel to stop now, as there are several other brilliant shows that I would love to see revived in the MCU. The one I find most exciting, however, is The Defenders, as I think this could create a strong backbone for the MCU’s Disney+ projects, and confirm the futures of several forgotten heroes.

The Future Of Many MCU Disney+ Heroes Is Uncertain

Several Heroes Haven’t Been Seen Since They First Appeared In The MCU

Marvel Studios branched out into television with the onset of the Multiverse Saga, kicking off with one of my personal favorites, WandaVision, the first MCU TV series to release on Disney+. Agatha All Along marks the eleventh MCU series releasing on Disney+, and each series has introduced new and exciting characters into live-action who have expanded the world of the MCU massively. However, we haven’t seen some of these characters since they made their first appearance on Disney+, and for some, this means we’ve shockingly been missing them for three years.

Marvel Studios’ most recent Disney+ series may have come to an end, but there are plenty of upcoming MCU TV shows in development.

Despite many of the MCU’s Disney+ projects receiving solid reviews and faring well (others not so much – *cough* Secret Invasion *cough*), there is a distinct lack of second seasons planned for the MCU’s future. Loki, What If…?, Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ’97, which is technically set outside the MCU, are the only shows with confirmed second seasons. This makes me worried about the future of some of the most entertaining and exciting new heroes in the MCU, but I’ve worked out how they can return without the need for second seasons.

The Defenders Season 2 Could Connect Recent MCU Heroes

The Defenders First Premiered On Netflix In 2017

Reviving The Defenders as a true Disney+ series in the MCU’s primary timeline would be the perfect way to bring together some of the franchise’s most interesting new heroes. The Defenders initially included only Matt Murdock’s Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Danny Rand’s Iron Fist, with help from Colleen Wing, Misty Knight and others. I think the team’s roster could be much more fleshed-out in the MCU proper, as any number of forgotten Disney+ heroes could join the Defenders, in lieu of second seasons for their own Disney+ shows.

Daredevil’s connections to Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk and Maya Lopez’s Echo make them clear candidates to join the Defenders team in the MCU’s future. The likes of Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Marc Spector’s Moon Knight, Jack Duquesne (who could be the Swordsman) and G’iah’s Super Skrull all haven’t appeared since their debuts, while I’d love for this new Defenders team to also include Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel. Reviving The Defenders seems like the ideal way to bring together the MCU’s Disney+ heroes, ensuring they don’t just get lost in the mix of the ever-growing superhero franchise.

A New Defenders Crossover Series Could Copy Phase 1’s Avengers Movie

2012’s The Avengers Brought Together Several Separated Heroes

2012’s The Avengers brought together six separate heroes on the big-screen, and The Defenders season 2 could do the same for the MCU’s smaller-scale, Disney+ heroes. Marvel Studios has already introduced the perfect villain, as Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin poses a threat to every street-level hero in the MCU, so I would love to see the Defenders reform with new members to battle Vincent D’Onofrio’s captivating villain. With no second seasons of their own shows in sight, bringing back The Defenders seems like the best way to continue the stories of some of the MCU’s most thrilling new heroes.
