Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #68! There are only a few villains in Marvel Comics with the power to annihilate the entire universe, and more often than not, those villains only tangle with cosmic or magical heroes – not Spider-Man. Spider-Man primarily fights bad guys who only have the capacity to impact New York City – at most, the world – not the universe. But now, that’s completely changed, as Spider-Man’s new villain could easily destroy the entire Marvel Universe, and is actually on his way to doing just that.

In The Amazing Spider-Man #68 by Justina Ireland and Andrea Broccardo, Spider-Man teams up with the X-Men to fight an all-new villain: Callix. In this story arc, Spider-Man has become the Champion of Earth against the Eight Scions of Cyttorak (a title bestowed upon him by Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Doom), meaning Spidey’s tasked with defeating each Scion with his newfound magical abilities. While he has already defeated Callix, Spider-Man – or the X-Men – hasn’t faced anything like this, as Callix just got a cosmic upgrade courtesy of the Blight.

The Blight is a cosmic force of nature that has the power to engulf entire universes in chaos, poisoning lifeforms with ‘Soul Rot’, which forces them to kill the things they love most while spreading general mayhem. An infected world will also experience this type of ‘Soul Rot’, as it will begin to tear itself apart until the entire planet is dead. Cyttorak previously kept the Blight at bay, but after Callix opened himself up to its influence, the Blight has set its sights on the Marvel Universe, and it doesn’t seem as though anyone can stop it.

The Blight Already Killed Spider-Man, & the Marvel Universe is Next

Callix Snapped Spider-Man’s Neck Like It was Nothing

When Spider-Man chased Callix into the Crimson Cosmos after Callix infected New York City with the Blight (which will soon engulf the entire planet, and eventually the whole Marvel Universe), Callix grabbed Spidey by the throat and snapped his neck like it was nothing. That was how The Amazing Spider-Man #68 ended, which is a bad omen for the Marvel Universe as a whole as this storyline goes forward.

Aunt May Is Dead, And Spider-Man Would Have Saved Her If He’d Listened to Uncle Ben

Spider-Man has forgotten Uncle Ben’s famous maxim about power and responsibility, and now Aunt May has paid the ultimate price in a new story.

Not only did Callix kill Spider-Man, but he also murdered Cyttorak as well as the other Scions of Cyttorak. Indeed, the entire Crimson Cosmos has been infected by the Blight, and Spider-Man has been taken out of the fight already. Plus, back on Earth, the X-Men, along with every New York City resident, have been infected by the Blight’s ‘Soul Rot’, which means the city is tearing itself apart as Spider-Man’s corpse lies in the Crimson Cosmos, with Callix and the Blight primed to spread this destructive chaos across the Marvel Universe.

Spider-Man’s Universe-Ending Villain May Have Already Won

Could This Be the End of the Marvel Universe?

As it stands, the idea that Spider-Man’s latest villain, the Blight, could destroy the Marvel Universe is becoming increasingly less hypothetical. Spider-Man is dead, the X-Men are corrupted, and all of New York City is tearing itself apart, not to mention the Crimson Cosmos as a whole has been utterly compromised. So, is that it? Is the Marvel Universe as fans know it coming to an end? Honestly, at this point, that seems far too possible for comfort.

The Blight is a disembodied force of chaos and corruption, but it also has a terrifying physical form that has just made the Crimson Cosmos its new home (as shown in the image above).

That being said, the idea that the Marvel Universe is actually coming to an end seems unlikely, as this story will probably end with an unforeseen ace in the hole that will eliminate the threat of the Blight and bring Spider-Man back to his former glory. However, even if that does happen, that doesn’t detract from the fact that Spider-Man’s newest villain, the Blight, could easily annihilate the Marvel Universe – and is currently coming dangerously close to doing so.
