The death of Gwen Stacy is one of the most devastating moments in American comics history. Her return may prove to be even worse. The unthinkable will occur in May 2025, as the first love of Peter Parker returns in Gwenpool #1.
The first Gwenpool was created as part of a series of variant covers reimagining Gwen Stacy as various Marvel heroes. When the Deadpool variant proved popular with cosplayers, it was decided she should be made into a real character. However, for the sake of rights issues, Marvel decided she should not be connected to either Deadpool or Gwen Stacy.
Enter Gwen Poole, a comics fangirl from a reality where Marvel Comics‘ characters were fictional. Finding herself on Earth-616, Gwen defies her apparent destiny to be an extra in other peoples’ stories. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel Comics and the ability to break the fourth wall, she becomes Gwenpool.
The new Gwenpool will be an entirely different sort of character; one who is explicitly some dark variant of Gwen Stacy. Armed with wrist blades and an assassin’s training, this is not the woman Peter Parker loved. However, her appearance will coincide with the disappearance of Gwen Poole. This will bring in Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark, who are searching for their former West Coast Avengers teammate.
“Gwen Stacy is back from the grave and deadlier than ever,” proclaims writer Cavan Scott. “Weapon-X style abilities? Check. A line in killer put-downs? You’ve got it. This is not the Gwen you remember. But just who is behind her miraculous resurrection? And what has happened to the original Gwenpool’s usually careful existence?”
The new Gwenpool miniseries also marks the Marvel Comics premiere of Batman artist Stefano Nesi. “I couldn’t ask for a better partner than Stefano Nesi on art!” Scott added. “Monsters, mayhem and murder await as Spider-Man and Kate learn that nothing—or no one—is sacred!”
Gwenpool #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on May 14, 2025.
