WARNING! Spoilers for Laura Kinney: Wolverine #4Bucky Barnes has gained a reputation among comic readers as the Winter Soldier since his return to the land of the living, but Marvel has confirmed that this code-name isn’t coming back. Sorry, Bucky fans: the Winter Soldier is officially no more, while the Revolution seems to be sticking around for the long haul.

In Laura Kinney: Wolverine #4 by Erica Schultz, Giada Belviso, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit, Wolverine teams up with Bucky Barnes to embark on a road trip and take down HYDRA’s Henrick Schneider. During their battle, they’re referred to as “the famous Winter Soldier and X-23”.

In response to these titles, Bucky harshly says, “Those aren’t our names.” Both he and Laura have left their old identities behind to embrace new ones, though Bucky’s “Revolution” title is less widely accepted than Laura is as Wolverine. The Winter Soldier name is iconic, but it’s time to let it go.

Bucky Barnes’ Revolution Name Has Replaced His Winter Soldier Title

Sorry, Winter Soldier Fans: Bucky Barnes Is Officially The Revolution

Bucky Barnes killed the original Revolution in Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5 by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero, and he took the mantle for himself in the series’ sixth issue as he infiltrated the Outer Circle. This name change came with a costume change as well, though the costume hasn’t lasted quite as long as the name. Moreover, the name itself hasn’t always been utilized, so it has remained unclear whether Bucky prefers the name Revolution or Winter Soldier. Now, however, Bucky has established that he no longer believes himself to be the Winter Soldier.

Laura Kinney’s name change mirrors Bucky’s in notable ways, hence why their team-up works so well in this new issue – and why it’s notable for them both to have left their previous titles behind. The X-23 name, to Laura, represents her prior existence as an experiment born from Wolverine’s DNA. Becoming Wolverine symbolizes her taking on an identity of her own, with her using a chosen name rather than an identification number. Bucky, too, has chosen to become the Revolution rather than remain tied to his problematic past as the Winter Soldier.

Winter Soldier Is Badass, But Bucky Barnes’ History With the Name Sours It

The Revolution Name Has Much Less Baggage for Bucky

The Winter Soldier name is undeniably badass, and the MCU has helped cement it as Bucky’s most popular alter ego through the Captain America: The Winter Soldier film and the Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV series. Moreover, it’s the name that correlated with Bucky’s return from the dead in Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting’s Captain America. Still, it also can’t be denied that the name has sinister connotations. As the Winter Soldier, Bucky was brainwashed and reprogrammed to be an assassin for decades. Although he’s since joined Captain America’s side as an ally, Bucky’s alter ego remains contentious due to its origin.

The Revolution, on the other hand, speaks to a bold new approach for Bucky Barnes’ character moving forward. The name fits who Bucky is now, as opposed to who he was in the past, as he shifts his ambitions to sparking revolts against corrupt governments. By leaving the Winter Soldier in the past, Bucky can look to the future and become a full-fledged hero in a way that he can’t with his former alias. Bucky’s team-up with Wolverine highlights this via their mission to disrupt HYDRA in their own “revolution”, proving that the name is a better fit than Winter Soldier.

Bucky Barnes May Reject the Winter Soldier, But Marvel Hasn’t Let It Go

Even though Bucky has made it abundantly clear that he has no intention of reclaiming the Winter Soldier title, Marvel appears to have other ideas. While this story asserts that he doesn’t identify with that name, the solicitation for the upcoming New Thunderbolts* series by Sam Humphries and Ton Lima refers to him by that name as if nothing has changed at all. Marvel Comics has gone back and forth between calling him the Winter Soldier and the Revolution, leading to confusion about which title he prefers. Now, the debate is settled, as Bucky Barnes reveals that he’s the Revolution – whether Marvel likes it or not.
