Spider-Man and Godzilla will face off in a new miniseries set in the aftermath of Secret Wars — and Marvel has just released a first look at the issue that kicks it all off. With a trio of covers by Nick Bradshaw, Greg Land, and Lee Garbett, Marvel’s wall-crawler is set to go up against a kaiju who can knock those walls right out from under him in April.
Godzilla vs. Spider-Man hails from writer Joe Kelly (Deadpool), with art by Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men). The whole thing will be approached as a period piece, with Marvel promising Spidey’s black costume will make an appearance, as will other concepts that drove the books in that era like his on-again, off-again romance with Black Cat and his struggles at the Daily Bugle. So, yes, just to be clear — we’re talking about the original Secret Wars, not the more recent version that seems to be inspiring all the new movies. It will also be Godzilla’s first trip back to New York since an ill-fated outing in Hollywood decades ago.
Godzilla Is Coming to New York, and Spider-Man Is There To Meet Him
Can Peter Park Snap Photos of the Kaiju so He Can Pay Rent?
Godzilla’s rampage through New York begins this spring, with only Spider-Man there to stop him. You can bet he’ll have some words later when he finds out all the extra stuff his alien suit could have done if it had only been willing to let him know! With writing by Kelly, whose character-focused narratives and sense of humor have made titles like Deadpool and I Kill Monsters bestsellers, it’s likely he will capture the essence of that struggling, wise-cracking ’70s Spidey. And hey! Both he and Godzilla have that whole “radioactive blood” thing happening. You can see the solicitation text for the first issue below.
Fresh from the original SECRET WARS, PETER PARKER A.K.A. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN returns to Earth with a spiffy new (alien) costume without a care in the world except for a complicated love triangle with MJ and Black Cat…and unbelievable pressure at the Daily Bugle…rent…bills…super-villains…oh, and GODZILLA IS IN NEW YORK CITY with all its destructive power aimed squarely at the wall-crawler! Don’t miss the two most popular characters in pop culture history absolutely going at it in this kaiju-sized slugfest for the ages!
The three covers, which you can see above, have more than just token differences. The primary cover by Bradshaw features a look at Spidey’s black costume, while Lee Garbett’s is a mock-up of a classic promotional poster for a fight. Greg Land’s cover is the most “classic” of the three, featuring a traditional Spider-Man look as he swings away from the King of the Monsters. There’s no sense of the story just yet, although it’s a Godzilla story so you can imagine he’s stomping around breaking things. Can a character on Spider-Man’s power level handle Godzilla on his own? Well, he does have science smarts.
Godzilla Has a Long History in Marvel Comics
For years, Godzilla’s Appearances Have Been Out of Print
Running for 24 issues from 1977 to 1979, Marvel’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a fan-favorite, and saw period guest appearances by Marvel superheroes. Since Marvel doesn’t own Godzilla and Toho doesn’t own the Marvel Universe, though, reprints have been scarce and often, Marvel characters have had to be cut out of Godzilla reprints altogether. The character’s return to the Marvel Universe is a big moment for longtime fans — although it isn’t yet clear whether Marvel will acknowledge in-story the fact that its heroes have met up with Godzilla before.
“The second I heard that there was going to be a Godzilla x Spidey crossover set in the ‘80s, I almost leapt across the table to claim it,” Kelly told IGN. “This book is a chance to go nuts and have a blast with two iconic characters and channel the chaos of the time period that I was actively collecting Spider-Man. Nick Bradshaw really captures the absurdity of the concept and the vibe I was going for, while at the same time giving Godzilla and Spidey (in his perfectly-normal-nothing-weird-here-black suit!) the prestige and gravity they deserve. It’s a love letter served with an earth shattering roar!”
The hero has been published in comics, most recently over at IDW with talents like Eisner nominee Dave Baker contributing. Godzilla vs. Spider-Man #1 swings into comic shops on April 30, 2025.
