Get Ready, Marvel: Ultimate Loki Is Ready to Rock the Universe’s Newest Timeline

The Ultimate Universeis about to shine a major spotlight on one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, as its version of Loki makes his grand return to battle for the throne of Asgard. While this timeline’s take on the God of Mischief has remained mysterious for much of the alternate universe story thus far, he will finally be going toe-to-toe with his brother and a few other heroes of Earth-6160.

Marvel has now released details on Ultimates #11 – written by Deniz Camp, with art by Juan Frigeri – which brings Loki back to face off against Thor, Sif, and She-Hulk as the team tries to eliminate one of the Maker’s strongest allies.

Dike Ruan’s glorious cover for the issue teases the upcoming “War for Asgard”, as Loki towers over Thor and Sif with a devious grin, flexing his mysterious power. However, the Ultimates seek to ensure that he doesn’t remain in power much longer.

The God of Mischief has only appeared briefly on Earth-6160 since it kicked off, but that promises to change as he takes center stage in a battle against Thor and some of the other heavy-hitters on the Ultimates team. As revealed in Ultimate Invasion #2 by Jonathan Hickman, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, and Alex Sinclair – this version of Loki became King by killing Odin with the Maker’s help, and had Thor imprisoned as he ruled over the kingdom of Asgard. Thor eventually escaped along with his brother’s former ally, Sif, and now returns to take his rightful place on the throne.

The Asgardian showdown in Ultimates #11 should reveal more about this Loki, and how this take on the character contrasts with the version in Marvel’s main continuity. As Thor, Sif, and She-Hulk journey to Asgard and into mystery to free the kingdom from the villains’ control, it’s likely that they’ll uncover details about Loki’s rise to power and his relationship with the evil Reed Richards taking over their universe. By taking the Norse deity down from his throne built on lies, in the War for Asgard, the heroes will gain traction in their battle against the Maker and his council.

Or Could Loki Be Their “Surprising New Ally”?

The Ultimate Universe has thrived through its villains, offering some truly despicable versions of iconic Marvel characters, so it stands to reason that Earth-6160 might just feature the most malicious variant of Loki ever seen. However, as the solicitation teases that the Ultimates will gain a “surprising new ally”, it’s also possible that the trickster god could be turning into an antihero already. Since Loki has leaned towards the heroic side pretty often recently, both in comics and in the MCU, Camp and Frigeri’s latest issue would be subverting expectations by doubling down on the character’s devious and deceitful nature.

Though he clearly has ties to the Maker, the God of Mischief hasn’t been present on his council of villains, and his role among them has remained unclear for much of the Ultimates’ first year as a team. Nevertheless, Ultimates #11 promises to finally reveal Loki’s glorious purpose on Earth-6160 and make some major new developments for Asgard and the overall universe moving forward. When the Ultimate Universe finally pits Thor and his teammates against the God of Thunder’s greatest adversary, Loki is guaranteed to have a few shocking tricks up his sleeve.
