Having been given the label of a ladies’ man, Gambit has had numerous love interests over the years – with varying degrees of commitment. Some love interests have been blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, while other love interests are so hardcore for Remy Labeau that he risks his life for them. Likewise, there are some love interests of the Cajun that Marvel fans know by heart, like Rogue and Bella Donna.

On the flip side, there are quite a few Gambit love interests who have flown a little under the radar and deserve a little more recognition. From the very dramatic stops and starts for Rogue and Gambit to the crush he had on a British police officer, one thing can be said about Gambit’s love life: it is never boring.

Dr. Cecilia Reyes

Debuted in X-Men #65 by Scott Lobdell, Carlos Pacheco, Art Thibert, Liquid!, Christian Lichtner, Aron Lusen, and Richard Starkings

A New York native, Cecilia Reyes had a lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, which she successfully achieved, but at the same time also gained the mutant power of creating a psioplasmic bio-field around herself. When she is part of a team alongside Northstar, Iceman, Beast, Gambit, and Warbird in Astonishing X-Men, she forms a romantic relationship with Remy LaBeau. The pair seem incredibly mismatched on paper, with Dr. Cecilia Reyes being a highly-educated doctor, while Gambit has been a thief since he was a child.

Although an interesting similarity exists between the pair: their struggle between wishing to do what they desire and being a reluctant superhero. Dr. Reyes only wants to be a trauma surgeon but has felt pulled into being a superhero due to circumstance, not desire. Meanwhile, Gambit has gone back and forth between his more rebellious ways, which have aligned him with villains like Mr. Sinister, and being a part of the heroic X-Men.

When she frames Gambit for stealing to cover her tracks for her own thievery, the British police officer Alexandra Davies is on the case and works with Gambit to catch Yukio. Alexandra’s charming personality – including her kindness, honor, and her trusting nature – lured Gambit in, and he quickly formed feelings for her.

Unfortunately for him, she turned Gambit down because she could not tolerate his thieving ways and overall shady dealings, leaving Gambit rejected. Gambit’s feelings for Alexandra Davies were never meant to turn into anything more, because she gets killed by Arcade while trying to uncover a plot that involved the framing of Wolverine as a serial killer.

In the Exiles series, Gambit and Storm have multiple versions of themselves, and all of them love the other. Despite death, the versions of Gambit still love the versions of Storm: a love that transcends mortality.

Some Marvel fans have even made the bold claim that Storm and Gambit’s love shows them to be more like soulmates than Gambit and Rogue, one of the most well-known couples in the Marvel Universe. Likewise, in the Millennial Visions series, Gambit and Storm actually have a daughter named Medea in 2035 who has the lightning powers of her mother and craftiness of her father.

A disciple of Magneto, Frenzy believed him to be the voice of mutants everywhere, and as a result, she became a member of Apocalypse’s squad in order to get even with humanity.

Under Apocalypse, she created the Alliance of Evil along with Apocalypse’s other minions. Given her association with X-Men enemies and rivals, Frenzy has been on the opposing side of Gambit more times than not. One particular occasion saw Frenzy going against the gold X-Men team where she pursued Gambit, who retaliated by hitting her with a charged tire.

They crossed paths again when they coincidentally both broke into the Museum of the Americas, where they were looking into the same artifact (the one Gambit stole when they met) for different reasons; Gambit’s reason just happened to be that the artifact was implanted into his chest.

Joelle did Gambit yet another solid when she broke him out of the police’s grip. Their adventures continue when they travel to Guatemala together, where they return the stolen artifact. They also break into Red Skull’s research compound under the guise of finding a chemical that would help Joelle’s daughter. It is later revealed that Joelle’s daughter actually died, and the stolen chemical from the Hydra compound can kill the immortal Joelle, which she then ingests.

A form of manipulation she used on the members of the Guild was providing a long-life elixir.

While Gambit eventually crossed Candra to save Bella Donna, he actually had a relationship with Candra at one point in his past. Having an affair in Europe, Gambit did not know that she was the Guild’s founder and funder. She was eventually killed by Cyclops and Storm through an injury to her crystal heart.

Gambit, along with other mutant thieves, steal a piece of the M’kraan Crystal so that they can reverse the events of the Age of Apocalypse.

Unfortunately, they are thwarted from using the crystal when Apocalypse’s henchmen attack them, and Gambit is put between a rock and a hard place when he must decide between saving his girlfriend Lila or saving the universe from the Age of Apocalypse. While this decision may seem impossible, it is easy-peasy for Gambit, who chooses to save his love, Lila, regardless of the consequences for the world.

However, afterward, there were some serious issues when Bella Donna’s brother challenged Remy to a fight to the death, which Remy won. Since Remy killed the son of the Assassins’ Guild, the idea of peace between the groups was severely threatened, so Gambit was exiled out of New Orleans and started a new life – apart from Bella Donna. The tables turn on the thriving seductress, however, when Gambit has to undergo his “Tracts of Passage” into the Thieves’ Guild.

The initiation act tasked to Gambit is to take back the necklace for the Guild. Deciding to have some fun before his arranged marriage to Bella Donna – as well as accomplishing his Guild initiation task – he seduces Genevieve Darceneaux to get the pendant. He is successful at stealing the pendant… until Sabretooth gets involved, and Gambit must choose between saving his brother or giving Sabretooth the pendant. Of course he chooses his brother.

Rogue

Debuted in The Avengers Annual #10 by Chris Claremont, Michael Golden, Josef Rubinstein, Dave Simons, Armando Gil, and Joe Rosen

Marvel fans everywhere know the relationship between Rogue and Gambit: a truly fan-favorite Marvel couple. They had their frequent starts and stops, mainly due to Rogue’s fears that she would hurt Gambit if she ever touched him. Likewise, his past and sometimes resurgence of thieving has made it hard for Rogue to completely trust Gambit at certain points. They love each other more or less from the start, but they do not form a relationship right away, with many complications and obstacles that have been ever-present for them.

Regardless, the pair managed to make it through all the blocks and eventually got married after receiving some intensive couples therapy that was set up by Kate Pryde. However, even after getting married, things are not totally smooth-sailing, with Rogue and Gambit’s honeymoon being interrupted by a mission to save the Shi’ar Empire.
