Warning: contains spoilers for Ultraman x Avengers #4!
Galactus will soon be gunning for the MCU, but Marvel just nerfed his powers in a big way. Few can inspire as much fear and awe in the Marvel Universe as Galactus. The all-powerful planet eater is a primal force in the cosmos, and seemingly unstoppable. Yet in Ultraman x Avengers #4, a major revelation about Galactus and how his powers work comes to light, with serious consequences for him.
Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom are no strangers to the Ultraman franchise, having written all of Marvel’s Ultraman comics.
Ultraman x Avengers #4 is written by Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom and drawn by Francesco Manna. Galactus has been ripped from his native universe, and sent to Ultraman’s Earth. Galactus, weakened, decides to consume the planet. The Avengers and Ultraman team up to repel Galactus. After the dust from the conflict settles, Galactus agrees to return to his universe with the Avengers. Galactus then drops a bombshell: he had always intended to return to Earth-616, as his essence is tied to it.
Galactus Will Soon Be Invading the MCU in Fantastic Four: First Steps
On the Eve of Galactus’ MCU Debut, Marvel is Curbing His Powers
Galactus is one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, and his only peers are entities such as the Living Tribunal and the One-Above-All. Introduced during Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s epic 1960s Fantastic Four run, Galactus came to Earth, ready to devour it. The Fantastic Four barely turned Galactus back, and even though he swore to attack Earth again, he has indeed done so occasionally. Galactus has been translated into live-action, albeit not very well, in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He will appear in this year’s First Steps film, set in the MCU.
Galactus’ admission that his essence is warp and woof with Earth-616’s universe is new to the character’s lore, and it raises many questions about the Planet Killer, namely what happens if he stays away from his native universe for too long.
While fans eagerly await Galactus’ arrival in the MCU, Marvel is making the curious move to limit his power. If Galactus had limits to his powers before, they had never been explored or defined, which makes his confession in Ultraman x Avengers #4 shocking. Galactus’ admission that his essence is warp and woof with Earth-616’s universe is new to the character’s lore, and it raises many questions about the Planet Killer, namely what happens if he stays away from his native universe for too long. It also provides a new way to defeat Galactus as well.
Will the MCU Make This Change to Galactus’ Powers As Well?
This new revelation about Galactus’ powers gives the Planet Eater something in common with another powerful force in the cosmos: the Infinity Stones. Galactus has tasted the power of the Infinity Stones, most notably in 1991’s Infinity Gauntlet miniseries. Much like Galactus, the Infinity Stones only work in their native universes—they are cheap gems anywhere else in the multiverse. Both Galactus and the Infinity Stones channel serious cosmic powers, with the ability to manipulate time and space. With this in mind, the idea that Galactus’ powers are tied to his native universe suddenly makes more sense.

While the Devourer of Worlds may be an all-powerful cosmic god, his strength isn’t infallible. Even gods can be brought down, Galactus included.
Only a shadow of Galactus appeared in the Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer, but it was enough to begin the hype for his entrance into the MCU. Rumors state that First Steps will be set on an alternate Earth in the MCU. The Infinity Stones Thanos used in Avengers: Endgame did not work outside of it, as seen in Loki season one. It is possible this new revelation about Galactus’ powers is an attempt to get ahead of a change the MCU may be introducing. Even though he has been nerfed by Marvel, Galactus is still quite powerful.
