Highlights

Former Fortnite creative and Epic Games director Donald Mustard has become a partner at AGBO, the production company founded by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Mustard’s addition to AGBO suggests that the company may be venturing into game development, as the Russo brothers have expressed interest in the video game industry in the past. The collaboration between Mustard, who co-created Fortnite, and the Russo brothers, known for their work in Marvel films, is a partnership that fans of both gaming and film should keep an eye on for future projects.

The official website for AGBO, the production company founded by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo, recently added former Fortnite creative and Epic Games director Donald Mustard as a new partner. Mustard, who helped spearhead many of Fortnite‘s best crossover events, has now retired from Epic and is potentially working on something entirely new with the Russo brothers.

One of the best-selling games of all time, Fortnite is an online multiplayer battle royale game, popular for its building mechanics, character skins, and dancing emotes. Donald Mustard originally co-created the fan-favorite game back in 2017 but recently retired from his 15-year position at Epic Games. He has not made any public statements regarding his future endeavors, but his new listing on the AGBO website suggests he and the Russo brothers may have a new project in the works.

According to an update on the official AGBO About page, retired Fortnite mastermind Donald Mustard is now a “Partner” of the Russo brothers’ production company. Neither Mustard nor AGBO have made a formal statement announcing the partnership, but Mustard is listed just beneath the Russos on the AGBO Team members page on the company website. Mustard’s description on the web page notes his previous tenure at Epic Games and his leadership in directing some of Fortnite‘s biggest in-game events, namely live concerts performed by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and Ariana Grande, among others. The Russo brothers have previously shared their interest in the video game industry, noting its close ties to film and entertainment, and a partnership with Donald Mustard is a possible signal of AGBO’s future plans.

Back in February 2022, Joe Russo stated that the focus of AGBO was its partnerships with video game companies. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Russo’s co-host at that February talk was Donald Mustard, and the topic of the conversation was the future of entertainment. The two also co-hosted a talk in April of this year, specifically focusing on the importance of gaming in contemporary storytelling.

As such, the recent inclusion of Fortnite‘s creator as an official partner of the production company may suggest that AGBO has future endeavors in game development. The two entities have collaborated on gaming in the past, with Marvel’s Thanos joining the Fortnite lineup back in 2021 after the Russos chatted with Mustard about teaming up. Mustard and the Russos first met in 2018, and their gradual increase in collaborations, and now an official partnership, is a team-up that video game fans may want to keep an eye on.

Film and gaming have had a number of big collaborations over the years, most often in the form of film adaptations of beloved video game franchises. The Sonic the Hedgehog films and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are just a few of the many crossovers between movie and game studios. With the former Fortnite game director now teaming up with two popular Marvel film directors, interested fans will want to stay tuned for updates on their future projects.
