The first trailer for new horror flick Night Swim has been released, featuring Marvel star Wyatt Russell.

The supernatural thriller will follow Russell as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with wife Eve (Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin).

The family, rounded out by teenage daughter Izzy (Amelie Hoeferle, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and son Elliot (Gavin Warren, Fear the Walking Dead), find that the house’s swimming pool isn’t nearly as picturesque as it looks.

The official tagline of Night Swim reads: “Everything you fear is under the surface” and the film’s synopsis ends with the terrifying tease: “A dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.”

The first trailer of the Atomic Monster and Blumhouse (M3GAN) produced horror sets up plenty of aquatic scares for Russell’s (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier) on-screen family.

After the family move to the seemingly idyllic neighbourhood, they’re thrilled at the inclusion of the large pool in their new back garden, unaware of what lurks below the surface.

Primarily teased is a game of Marco Polo featuring Izzy, which turns sour very quickly after she’s abandoned in the pool (at night) by a friend, only to be rejoined by something far more sinister.

While this is the only scare explicitly teased in the trailer, a sneak peek image of the film also depicts the family standing in the empty pool, looking at what appears to be a lot of blood heading down the drain.

Night Swim is inspired by a short film from 2014 of the same name – with writer and director Bryce McGuire returning for the feature length version.

The film is produced by James Wan – the mind behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Jason Blum, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man.

Night Swim releases in UK cinemas on January 5, 2024.
